국문 초록

주희의 선지후행론과 왕양명의 지행합일론은 양지의 표현과 획득이라는 두 맥락에 비추어 조명될 수 있다. 먼저, 표현의 맥락에서 보면, 두 견해 사이에는 차이점이 없다. 두 견해 모두 양지는 행에 규제력으로 작용하고 있다는 점을 드러내고 있는 것이다. 두 견해에서 공통적으로 강조되고 있듯이, 지행합일은 곧 자연을 가리킨다. 한편, 획득의 맥락에서 보면, 두 견해는 뚜렷이 대조된다. 주희는 지를 매체로 하여 양지가 획득된다고 보는 반면에, 왕양명은 행을 매체로 하여 양지가 획득된다고 본다. 이와 같이, 왕양명이 주희와 견해를 달리하는 것은 자연과 자득의 내밀한 관련을 정당하게 존중하지 않은 데에서 비롯되었다. 현대적 용어로 말하여, 자득과 자연은 교과의 내면화와 정당화에 해당한다. 誠과 明의 관련에 비추어 양자의 관련을 드러내고 있는 「중용」의 설명에 의하면, 우리는 교과를 배워 획득된 심성(교과의 내면화, 자득)을 삶의 다양한 사태에서 적절히 표현하는 삶(교과의 정당화, 자연)을 살고 있다. 그리고 바로 그 점에서 지행의 괴리는 앞서거니 뒤서거니 하며 심성을 획득하는 정도의 차이를 지칭할 뿐, 그 자체로 특별한 의미를 가지는 것은 아니라고 말할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Chu Hsi s doctrine of knowledge preceding action and Wang Yang-Ming s doctrine of the unity of knowledge and action can be explained in the light of both expression of the primordial mind and its acquisition. Viewed in the expression of the primordial mind, the doctrines of Chu Hsi and Wang Yang-Ming are not different from each other. Chu Hsi and Wang Yang-Ming have views in common that the primordial mind exerts influence on our daily activities. As stressed in two doctrines, the unity of knowledge and action refers to the state of Naturalness(自然, tzu-yan), in which the primordial mind gets manifested in the actual life. But, viewed in the acquisition of the primordial mind, the doctrines of Chu Hsi and Wang Yang-Ming are clearly contrasted with each other. Chu Hsi had emphasis on the view that the primordial mind is cultivated only through knowledge. Unlike Chu Hsi, Wang Yang-Ming maintained that it is acquired through action. Thus, Wang Yang-Ming s alternative view underestimates the Self-Integration(自得, tzu-te), the internalization of the studying subjects, which serves as the media for the Naturalness. The Naturalness and Self-Integration respectively refers to the internalization and the justification of the studying subjects in educational terms. According to the Doctrine of the Mean(中庸, chung-yung) which closely relates the Naturalness to the Self-Integration, we live in such a way that our daily activities are put under the influence of the primordial mind cultivated so far. There being the difference in degree, we stand in the same line of life for the cultivation of the primordial mind. It should be kept in mind that there is no gap between knowledge and action.
