불교수행론에서의 지행의 괴리

국문 초록

도덕교육론의 관점에서 볼 때, 도덕규범은 도덕교육을 받은 결과 행동으로 실천되어야 할 도덕교육의 목적이며, 지행의 괴리는 도덕교육의 실패로 나타나는 현상이다. 그러나 불교수행론의 관점에서 볼 때, 지행의 괴리는 도덕교육의 실패도, 도덕교육이 극복해야 할 과제도 아니다. 그것은 오로지 도덕교육이, 도덕규범을 ‘알도록’ 하는 도덕교육의 사태와 그것을 ‘실천으로 옮기는’ 도덕실천의 사태를 구분하는 데서 따라오는 당연한 결과일 뿐이다. 여기에 비하여 불교수행론에서는 원칙상 지행의 괴리 문제가 발생하지 않는다. 거기서는 도덕실천의 사태 이외에 별도의 도덕교육의 사태가 존재하지 않기 때문이다. 물론 이때의 도덕교육의 목적은 지행의 괴리를 극복하는 데에 있는 것이 아니라 ‘진여에 대한 믿음’을 확립하는 데에 있다. 진여에 대한 믿음을 확립하기 위해서는 도덕실천의 사태를 통한 도덕교육과 더불어 도덕실천의 사태에 대한 이해를 필요로 한다. 이 점으로 인하여 불교수행론에서는 전4문 수행 이외에 지관문 수행을 마련한 것이라고 말할 수 있다.

영문 초록

According to the theory of moral education, the aim of moral education is to follow the moral norms that should be practiced as a result of moral education, and the gap between knowledge about moral norms and action is assumed as failure of moral education. But according to the buddhist practice, the gap between knowledge and action is not occurred owing to the failure of moral education and is not the task that moral education should overcome. It is the result that is followed by separating the moral education to teach knowledge about moral norms from the moral practice to carry their knowledge into practice. Compared with the theory of moral education, the buddhist practice does not give rise to the problem, that is, the gap between knowledge and action. Because there is no moral education than moral practice. Of course, in this case, the aim of moral education is not to overcome the gap between knowledge and action. It is to establish the faith in Suchness. In order to establish the faith in Suchness, we need to understand not only how to practice moral norms but also why to practice moral norms. Therefore, there is practicing the four activities , i.e. the practices of charity, of observation of precepts, of patience, and of zeal, as listed in the first four of the five practices of faith than practicing the cessation and intellectual insight as the fifth practice in the buddhist practice.
