교과의 내면화 이론으로서의 격물치지론

국문 초록

이 글은 『대학』 의 격물보전장에 나오는 격물치지의 개념을 교과의 내면화이론으로 해석하고자 한다. 이를 위해서 먼저 격물의 의미와 치지의 의미 그리고 그 양자의 관련은 무엇인가 하는 문제를 중점적으로 살펴보았다. 그 결과 격물과 치지는 각각 궁리라는 활동의 두 측면, 즉 인식의 객관적 측면과 인식의 주관적 측면으로 해석되며, 이 두 측면의 상호 관련은 ‘치지는 격물의 결과이다’라는 명제로 요약된다. 그 다음 치지의 의미와 활연관통의 의미, 그리고 그 양자사이의 관련을 칸트의 선험적 인식론에 기초하여 해석하였다. 여기서 치지를 ‘인식의 논리적 조건’(아프리오리)으로 해석하여 ‘치지는 격물의 논리적 가정’임을 밝혔다. 이 글은 격물치지론을 칸트의 선험적 인식론에 의존하여 교과의 내면화이론으로 해석함으로써 우리가 교과를 공부하는 사태는 우리의 마음과 그 대상으로서의 교과 사이에 이념과 개념의 ‘순환’이 부단히 일어나는 사태라는 점을 드러내었다. 개념과 이념으로 대표되는 마음의 중층구조에 입각하여 설명되는 교과의 내면화 과정은 다름 아닌 ‘미발의 표준으로서의 성’을 획득하는 사태이며 이것을 가장 여실하게 표현하는 용어가 ‘활연관통’이다. ‘활연관통’은 ‘미발의 표준으로서의 성’이 획득된 상태, 즉 교과가 내면화된 상태를 기술하는 개념이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this is to reinterpret Ko-Wu Chih-Chih(格物致知) in the text of the Great Learning as internalization of Subject Matter. The investigation of things(ko-wu) and the extension of knowledge(chih-chih) is the important concepts that occupies an important position in Chu Hsi’s philosophical system and the core concept that realize the Neo-Confucianism in the aspect of methodology. That’s why Chu Hsi has affection for the investigation of things. Among all Neo-Confucian philosophers, Chu His is the only philosopher who alone emphasized the importance of book-learning in order to attain the Li. Through the phrase of ‘chih-chih was in ko-wu , we know that chih-chih is the result of book-learning(ko-wu). It is also examined that the ‘ko-wu chih-chih’ is the two aspects of investigation of Li(窮理). Ko-wu chih-chih is represented in many way, but according to this study, chih-chih can be interpreted in the view of the theory of Kant s transcendental epistemology. Chih-chih is a priori in terms of Kant s epistemology as the subject condition of cognitive situation. The other clauses in Eight Categories’ except of ‘ko-wu chih-chih’ are the behavial expressions of ‘Study of Li’ in many situations. In this study, the investigation of things’ (ko-wu) was interpreted as the common basis of three sections: education, politics and morals and also on this ground, it is identified that investigation of knowledge implies morals and the external manifestation of investigation of knowledge is politics.
