국문 초록

본 논문은 ‘사람을 살리는 교육은 무엇인가’ 하는 문제의식에서 출발하여, 교육의 본위는 심성 함양의 활동을 하는 데 있다는 논지로 귀결된다. 불교는, 철두철미 사람을 살리는 종교로서, 인간이 처한 삶의 현실로서의 괴로움과 그것을 해결하기 위한 삶의 과제를 제시하는 데에 탁월한 통찰을 보여준다. 본 논문은, 인간이 처한 괴로움의 본질을 그 극단에 이르기까지 보여주는 것으로서 생사의 윤회를 탐색하며, 生의 존귀함에 대한 각성과 자기제도의 길을 전하는 것으로서 생사의 해탈을 탐색한다. 세존은 인간이 바른 뜻과 바른 말과 바른 행동을 통하여 심성을 함양하는 것이 괴로움에서 벗어나는 방도라고 말한다. 즉, 사람이 살기 위해서는 가치 있는 삶을 추구해야 한다는 것이다. 이러한 세존의 가르침은, 오늘날 교육이 본래 해야 할 과업이 무엇인지 깨닫는 데에 도움이 된다. 교육은, 세속의 다른 활동들과는 다른 방식으로 사람을 살리는 일을 하며 그것이 교육의 본위가 되지 않으면 안 된다. 요컨대, 심성을 함양하는 실천을 함으로써 가치 있는 삶을 살도록 하는 것, 바로 이 일을 교육은 해야 한다

영문 초록

This thesis begins with the question of what type of education is to bring life to human beings, and draws a conclusion that a standard of education is to cultivate mind. Buddhism is in every way a religion of giving life to individuals, and reveals the superior insight into the ‘dukkha’(苦), which human beings are confronted with as the realities of present lives, and into presenting the task of life as the expedience to liberate us from the ‘dukkha’. And this thesis inquires into the reincarnation of life and death by revealing the nature of human ‘dukkha’ to the extreme degree, and into the moksha(解脫) by initiating individuals into the awakening for the life s importance and for the way of self-salvation. Buddha points out that it is the path of liberation from ‘dukkha’ to have right will, right speech, right behavior. That is, he says that we should pursue to lead a worthy life in order to live as human beings. These lessons of Buddha help to realize what the task of education should be in our age. Education is thoroughly to be activities to bring life to individuals in different way from others of the world. This should be the standard of education. Indeed, to lead worthy lives by practicing mind cultivation, this is the very task of education.
