국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 성리학에서 본격적으로 제기된 수기와 치인의 관련을 보다 구체적으로 이해하는 데에 있다. 성리학의 수기치인을 비판하는 다산의 관점에서, 치인은 반드시 수기에 의존하여 규정될 필요가 없으며, 수기 또한 ‘행위 수준의 도덕’에 한정되어 이해된다. 한편 성리학적 관점에서 치인은 ‘수기의 자연적 외부적 표현’으로 규정될 수 있다. 이 경우 치인의 의미가 수기와 별도로 규정되지 않는 것은, 치인은 수기에 의존하는 개념이며, 수기는 ‘존재 수준의 도덕’으로 이해되기 때문이다. 다산과 같은 유명론의 관점에서 성리학의 수기치인은 현실과 유리된 공허한 메아리로 여겨질지 모른다. 그러나 성리학의 수기치인은 본질상 도덕적 인간의 형성을 표명한 것으로 이해될 수 있으며, 그것의 올바른 의미는 중층구조의 틀에 비추어 볼 때 비로소 드러날 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to understand clearly the relation between self-cultivating and people-governing which is raised in earnest by Neo-Confucianism. From Tasan’s viewpoint which is opposed to that of Neo-Confucianist, people-governing need not be explained depending upon self-cultivating, and self-cultivating is limited to ‘doing-level morality’. Meanwhile, from the Neo-Confucian viewpoint, people-governing can be understood as ‘natural manifestation of self-cultivating’. In this case, the reason why people-governing is not explained irrelevant to self-cultivating is that the meaning of people-governing is dependent upon self-cultivating and self-cultivating is understood as ‘being-level morality’. ‘Self-cultivating and people-governing’ of Neo-Confucianism can be felt hollow without the sense for the real from Tasan’s viewpoint which can be regarded as nominalism. But ‘self-cultivating and people-governing’ of Neo-Confucianism can be considered as the assertion of ‘formation of moral human being’ in essence. The meaning of ‘self-cultivating and people-governing’ can be understood right only within the conceptual framework of twofold structure of the world(or the mind).
