국문 초록

서구의 지성사에서 루소는 상반된 평가와 논쟁의 대상이 되어 온 사상가 이다. 루소와 그의 저술에 대한 상반된 평가는 한 편으로는 루소를 이해하는 데 장애가 되지만, 다른 한 편으로는 루소 사상의 파라독스적 성격을 이해하는 지름길이 된다. 루소의 저술들은 교육의 상이한 측면을 설명하는 교육적 저술이며, 「에밀」의 교육이론 속에서 하나로 연결된다. 루소의 저술들은 인간 본성의 경험적 차원과 이념적 차원을 구분하고, 인간 본성의 이념적 차원을 교육 안에서 확인하고 실현하는 과정을 상상하고 설명한다. 루소는 양립 불가능한 모순을 하나로 연결하는 교육의 파라독스를 대면하도록 안내하는 위대한 비극적 사상가이다.

영문 초록

Jean-Jaque Rousseau and the meaning of his writing has been the subject of persistent controversy. Rousseau is one of the problematic thinker who has been condemned and praised, studied seriously and dismissed as eccentric, simultaneously, in the history of western intellectual idea. Interpreted as educational literature, Rousseau’s writings are mutually supported toward a fuller understanding of ‘the paradox of education’ by illuminating the different aspects or dimensions of educational practice. Rousseau’s Emile, taken as an educational literature, can be best understood as giving the internal coherence to Rousseau’s political writings and literary works, not by offering the methodical principle or prescription of educational practice, but by abstracting the human condition or human nature within the processes or stages of education, which is hidden behind the ordinary human life. Rousseau is the paradoxical thinker or ‘the tragic hero’ of paradox, par excellence, who shows us the paradox of education which coheres the contradictory concepts un-contradictorily, without which an understanding of the totality of education is impossible.
