국문 초록

플라톤과 아리스토텔레스 이래로 교육학에서 관심을 끌어온 수사학은 언어 그 자체를 논의의 주제로 하여 언어의 조건을 밝히기 위한 것이라고 볼 수 있다. 먼저, 플라톤은 언어의 심층적 기반을 밝히는 것에 관심을 두고 있다. 그리하여 플라톤에게 언어의 심층적 기반은 에로스라는 개념으로 구체화된다. 수사학에 관한 플라톤의 논의는, 언어는 그 이면에 에로스를 갖추고 있을 때에야 비로소 신성을 회복하는 매체가 된다는 점을 밝혀주고 있다. 플라톤과 달리, 아리스토텔레스는 언어가 갖추어야 할 조건을 그 표층적 특징에서 찾는다. 아리스토텔레스에게 그 표층적 특징은 언어의 논증 체계로 구체화된다. 플라톤에 비하여 아리스토텔레스는 언어의 조건을 사실적·경험적 맥락에서 규명하고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 한편, 라무스는 아리스토텔레스와 마찬가지로 언어의 논증 체계에 관심을 두고 있으면서도 특별히 교육에서 언어가 사용되는 방식―사고를 정확히 글로 표현하는 것과 말로 정확히 전달하는 것―에 관심을 두고 있다. 이 점에서 라무스는 언어의 조건을 교육적 맥락에 비추어 설명하고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 이제, 라무스에 이르러, 언어가 갖추어야 할 조건을 탐색하는 것-수사학-은 교과에 나타나 있는 언어가 어떤 조건을 갖추고 있어야 하는가 하는 문제로 된다. 희랍시대의 플라톤과 아리스토텔레스에서부터 르네상스의 라무스에 이르기까지 계속하여 조명되어 온 수사학적 전통은 언어가 그 본래의 기능―지식의 전달―을 다하는 데에 갖추어야 할 조건을 탐구해 온 과정으로 귀결된다고 볼 수 있다. 이 점에서, 이 수사학의 전통, 그리고 최근의 내러티브 이론은 근래 교육학계에 대두되고 있는 ‘심성함양의 매체이론’에 비추어 부연될 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

Rhetoric, one of main topics in pedagogy since Greek era of Platon and Aristoteles, tries to identify the conditions of language by dealing with the language itself. First, what Platon tried to determine is deeper base of language and he referred to the condition as the concept of eros. What he argues about rhetoric is that language can be a medium to restore divinity only if there is eros behind it. On the contrary, Aristoteles focused on surface feature of language. He presented argumentational system of language as the surface feature and identified the conditions of language in more realistic and empirical context than Platon did. Later in Renaissance, Ramus was interested not only in the argumentational system of language but also the pedagogical usage of language, which means expressing one’s thoughts concisely in writing and delivering them exactly in verbal. From this, he can be thought to determine the conditions of language in pedagogical context. It was not until Ramus’ time that rhetoric, seeking the conditions of language, was about a matter of what conditions pedagogical language should require. It can be concluded that the tradition of rhetoric from the Greek era to Renaissance is the process of seeking the conditions for language to fulfill its original function, delivering knowledge. In this sense, the recent theory of narrative as well as the tradition of rhetoric needs to be expanded on in light of the theory of media on cultivation of human nature.
