국문 초록

이 논문에서 우리는 슈탈의 유기체 이론과 생명철학을 탐구한다. 슈탈은 ‘유기체’(organismus)라는 개념이 등장해 확립되는데 가장 중요한 역할을 했던 인물이다. 그는 기계론적 원리를 벗어나는 생명체의 특징을 유기체라는 개념을 통해 설명한다. 슈탈은 신체 내에서 일어나는 특수한 운동이 있음을 보고하고, 이를 ‘긴장성 운동’(motus tonicus)으로 명명한다. 그것은 생명을 보존하기 위해 인체 내에서 발생하는 합목적적인 운동으로서, 기계론만으로는 결코 설명할 수 없는 운동이다. 그런데 슈탈에 따르면 생명체는 한갓 혼합물과 결코 동일할 수 없다. 생명체는 그것을 이루는 물질적 혼합으로 완전히 환원될 수 없다. 그래서 슈탈은 기계론과는 이질적인 원인을 생명의 원리로 내세운다. 그것은 바로 영혼(anima)이다. 그리고 이런 영혼과 결합된 우리의 신체는 단순한 물체와 결코 같을 수 없다. 그래서 슈탈은 신체를 유기체로 명명한다. 이때 그가 사용한 유기체라는 낱말 속에 ‘도구’라는 의미가 강하게 살아있다. 신체는 도구이다. 즉, 그것은 영혼의 도구이다. 이렇게 슈탈은 유기체 개념을 통해 기계론적 자연 속에서 생명의 요소를 부활시킨다. 유기체라는 개념은 생명체가 지니는 기계론과 목적론의 대립 문제를 그 자체로 함축하고 있다. 그러므로 그는 이후 독일 철학에서 중요하게 다루어질 생명의 본질에 대한 문제를 본격적으로 제기한, 데카르트 이후 가장 중요한 인물이다.

영문 초록

In this paper, I explain Stahl s concept of ‘organism’ and his philosophy of life. He was the one who played the most important role in the emergence and establishment of the concept of organism. Using that term, he explains the characteristics of living things which can not be grasped by mechanical view. Stahl reports that there is a special movement that takes place within the body and calls it tonic motion(motus tonicus). This is a purposive movement that occurs in the human body to preserve life, which can never be explained by mechanism alone. According to Stahl, living things can not be identified with the mixed things. For they cannot be fully reduced to the material mixtures which constitute them. Stahl, therefore, suggests a cause different from mechanism as the principle of life. That is the ‘soul’(anima). According to Stahl, living bodies, combined with the soul, can never be same as simple physical bodies. Living body is an organism. At this time, the meaning of the ‘instrument’ is strongly alive in the concept of organism. Living body is a kind of instrument. In other words, it is a tool of the soul. In this way, Stahl resurrects the concept of life. The concept of organism implies itself the antinomy between mechanism and teleology of life. He is therefore the most important figure after Descartes, who raised the problem of the essence of life, which would be seriously discussed later in German philosophy.
