지적장애 자녀를 둔 어머니의 장애수용 경험에 관한 현상학적 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 지적장애 자녀를 둔 어머니가 장애 자녀 양육으로 인한 부담 및 스트레스와 가족 간 갈등을 극복하여 장애를 인정하고 수용한 경험을 탐구하는데 목적을 두었다. 연구방법으로 지적장애아동 어머니 6명을 심층면담 하여 Colaizzi의 현상학적 연구방법을 적용하였다. 면담 결과 도출된 의미단위들을 탐색하여 어머니들의 장애수용경험을 알아보고 장애가족들이 겪게 되는 물리적·정신적 부담으로 인한 고충의 이해와 삶의 질을 향상시키는데 기초자료를 제공하고자 하였다. 연구결과, 지적장애 자녀를 둔 어머니는 장애 자녀의 출산과 양육과정에서 많은 부담 및 스트레스를 경험하게 된다. 그 과정에서 자녀의 장애를 외면하던 가정 내 가족일원과 주변의 시선으로 인해 장애 자녀 양육 이외에 또 다른 종류의 고통을 겪게 되며 이로 인해 부정적, 긍정적 심리변화를 반복해서 겪는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 포기하지 않는 모성의 힘과 장애를 인정하고 받아들이게 되는 가족구성원들의 끈끈한 사랑과 격려는 연구 참여자가 자녀의 장애를 인정하고 수용하는데 커다란 힘이 되었으며 어머니 자신의 삶에도 긍정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

This study was designed to explore the experiences of mothers of children with intellectual disabilities. In this study, the phenomenological approach, using Colaizzi’s strategy was adopted to analyze in-depth interviews with six mothers. By analyzing meaningful units from the interviews, we built a basis for understanding the anxiety, and the physical and mental burden experienced by these mothers, based on each mother’s stage of acceptance of her child’s disability. We found that the mothers interviewed experienced anxiety throughout pregnancy and childbirth, and while raising their children. They also experienced stress associated with stereotypes and judgment from family members and others. However, we also found that the power of the maternal role, as well as unconditional love from family members, played a significant role in these women’s ability to overcome stress, accept their children s disabilities, and approach their lives with a positive attitude.
