중학교 학생의 활동 경험이 시민의식에 미치는 영향 분석

국문 초록

본 연구는 중학생의 다양한 활동에의 참여 정도가 시민의식과 밀접한 관련성이 있을 것이라는 가정 하에 두 변인의 수준 및 영향 관계를 탐구할 목적으로 수행되었다. 이를 위해 「경기교육종단연구(GEPS)」의 자료 가운데 5차년도(2016)에 수집된 중학교 2학년 학생 4,887명의 응답 자료를 토대로 기술 통계, 상관관계분석 및 중다회귀분석을 실시하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 우리나라 중학생의 활동 경험 수준은 그리 높지 않았고, 특히 자치활동, 봉사활동, 독서활동에의 참여 수준이 동아리활동이나 진로활동에 비해 낮았다. 반면, 중학생의 시민의식 수준은 대체로 높았으며, 개방의식과 준법정신이 상대적으로 높은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 독립변수인 중학생의 활동 경험은 종속변수인 중학생의 시민의식에 통계적으로 유의한 영향을 미쳤으며, 그 영향력의 크기는 진로활동, 독서활동, 봉사활동, 자치활동, 동아리활동 순으로 확인되었다. 이는 중학생들이 다양한 활동에 참여할 경우 시민의식이 보다 높아질 수 있으며 활동의 종류에 따라 시민의식 함양 정도도 달라질 수 있다는 것을 실증적으로 확인시켜 주는 결과이다. 본 연구의 발견점을 토대로 중학생들의 참여 활동 경험을 양적, 질적으로 제고할 수 있는 정책적 제언을 도출하여 제시하였다.

영문 초록

This study aims to explore the influence of Korean middle school students participation in extra-curricular activity on their citizenship. Utilizing responses of 4,887 second-year middle school students included in the 5th(2016) year of the Gyeonggi Education Panel Study, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were conducted. The result shows that students participation level in extra-curricular activity was not high, in particular, in student council activities, volunteer activities and reading activities. The level of citizenship of students, on the other hand, was generally high, marking higher level in openness and law-abidingness. Second, students extra-curricular activity, the independent variable, had a statistically significant impact on the citizenship, the dependent variable, and the magnitude of the impact was in the order of career activities, reading activities, volunteer activities and student council activities. The result of study confirms the possibility that students citizenship can be promoted by extra-curricular activities organized by the schools. Based on the findings, we suggested policy recommendation to improve middle school students extra-curricular activities qualitatively as well as quantitatively.
