미술사에 전개되는 매체의 양상 분석

국문 초록

미술을 인식하는 방식은 시대마다 차이를 보여 왔고 이의 수용방식 또한 변화를 거듭해 왔다. 미술에서의 매체는 인식방식의 변화에 영향을 끼치는 중요한 요인 중의 하나였다. 따라서 이 연구는 미술에서 매체가 갖는 의미, 매체의 변화가 미술사에 미치는 영향, 미술사에 전개되는 매체의 양상을 분석하여 미술에서 매체가 갖는 의미를 재고하는데 논의의 중점을 두었다. 이에 고전주의 형식 미술에서 회화 표현을 풍부하게 만들었던 유화의 매체적인 특성에 대하여 살펴보았으며, 이후 인상주의 미술에서 화면의 질료적인 요소가 표현의 보조적 기능에서 어떻게 그림의 본질적 요소로 기능하게 되었는지를 알아보았다. 이어서 20세기 초에 등장한 콜라주와 레디메이드가 실물을 부착하거나 그대로 제시하여 전통적인 매체들과는 많은 차이를 보였기에 이러한 혁신적인 매체가 당대의 미술에 미치는 영향을 논의하였다. 전통적 미술에서는 매체가 도구나 수단인 예술의 보조적 기능으로 작동했으나, 19세기에 등장한 사진은 매체 그 자체로 매체예술이라는 형식이 되었기에 이후 매체예술에 대한 논의가 활발하게 진행될 수밖에 없었다. 이에 사진 이후의 매체예술을 정의한 후 현재 동시대 매체예술 중 디지털 매체예술에 관하여 살펴보았으며, 이어 현대미술에서 매체가 갖는 의미에 대하여 논의를 진행하였다. 결론적으로 이 연구는 고전주의 형식미술에서 현재까지 미술사에 전개되는 매체의 양상을 분석하고 매체의 의미를 재고하려는 연구라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The method of perceiving art has been varying from generation to generation, and the acceptance of certain methods has also been repeatedly changed. In art, media have been one of the important factors that have affected changes in the method of perception. Therefore, this study aims to reconsider the significance of media in art by analyzing the artistic meaning of media, the effects of changes in media on art history, and the aspects of media developed in art history. Accordingly, this study first examines the media characteristics of oil paintings that enriched painting expressions in classical style art and investigates how the material elements of the picture plane began to function as an essential element of paintings in the impressionist art, not simply providing the auxiliary function for expression. Thereafter, collage and ready-made that appeared at the beginning of the 20th century showed large differences from conventional media by attaching or presenting real objects as they were. The effects of such innovative media on the art of the age are also discussed. Although media were tools or means serving for auxiliary functions in traditional art, photos that appeared in the 19th century became a style termed media art by themselves as media. Therefore, discussions about media art could not but be made actively thereafter. This study defines the media art after photography appeared, examines the digital media art among various contemporary media arts, and discusses the meaning of media in contemporary art. In conclusion, this study is intended to reconsider the meaning of media by analyzing the aspects of media developed in art history, from classical style art to the present.
