국문 초록

이 연구는 조선전기의 서적 부족 상황이 당시 교육 및 과거에 미친 영향을 고찰하기 위한 것이다. 조선전기는 서적 인쇄에 필요한 종이 생산능력의 저하로 인해 서적의 보급이 절대적으로 부족하였다. 이를 극복하기 위해 국가에서는 주자소나 지방 관청들로 하여금 서적을 인쇄하여 보급하도록 독려하거나 중국으로부터 서적을 수입하는 등의 노력을 기울였지만, 이러한 서적 부족 문제를 해결하기에는 역부족이었다. 당시에는 서적의 부족으로 인해 유생들에게 필수 교재인 경서(經書) 가격이 엄청나게 고가여서, 이를 온전히 갖춘 유생들은 희소할 수밖에 없었다. 이에 국가에서는 서적의 부족으로 인한 유생들의 고충을 해결하기 위해 서점을 설치하여 서적의 유통을 활성화시킴으로써 가격을 낮추려 하였으나, 여러 이유로 인해 서점의 설치는 이루어지지 못하였다. 이러한 서적의 부족 현상은 당시의 교육, 그리고 이와 밀접한 관련이 있었던 과거에 영향을 미칠 수밖에 없었는데, 경서를 제대로 갖추지 못한 유생들은 동료들이 작성한 과거시험 예상문제집인 초집을 필사(筆寫)하려 하였으며, 경서의 학습인 경학(經學)이 여의치 않아 기본적으로 강경(講經)을 실시하는 식년시와 강경 위주의 별시에는 응시할 수 없어 주로 제술을 시험하는 별시에 지원하였던 것으로 판단된다. 또한 경서가 없는 유생들은 초집에만 의존하게 됨으로써 학습태만의 경향을 보였는데, 이처럼 경학이 제대로 이루어지지 않음으로써 국가의 가장 중요한 과업인 교화(敎化)에도 지장을 초래하였던 것으로 보인다. 뿐만 아니라 국가에서는 사학(四學)이나 향교와 같은 학교에 제대로 서책을 공급하지 못함에 따라 교사들이 열람할 수 있는 교재가 없어 정상적인 교육이 이루어질 수 없었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate the influences of shortage of books on the education and the civil service exams in the early Joseon Dynasty. At that time. the supply of books was absolutely insufficient due to the decrease of paper production capacity required for book printing. In order to overcome this problem, they tried not only to encourage the national printing offices and local authorities to print and distribute books but also to import books from China, but they could not solve the problem of book shortage. As such, at the time, the price of the Confucian Classics was so high due to lack of books that the number of fully equipped students with them was very small. Therefore, the bookstores needed to be set up to activate the circulation of the books, thereby trying to lower the prices of the books, but they could not be installed for various reasons. The shortage of books had a negative impact on the education and the civil service exams of the time. Larger students who did not have the Confucian Classics tended to take the civil service exams by transcribing the collections of anticipated problems by colleagues . In addition, the students who did not have the Confucian Classics showed the behavior of learning neglect, which seemed to have impeded the edification of the most important task of the nation, Gyo-Hwa(敎化). And because the teachers as well as the students had no sufficient textbooks in the schools, the proper education could not be done at that time.
