순자 성악설의 재검토

국문 초록

순자의 성악설을 둘러싼 논쟁은 쉽게 끝나지 않고 있다. 어떤 학자들은 순자의 성 개념이 맹자의 성 개념과 다르기 때문에 순자가 주장하고자 하는 바가 맹자가 성선설을 통해 주장하는 것과 크게 다르지 않다고 주장한다. 또 다른 학자들은 순자는 맹자의 정반대 입장을 표명했다고 주장한다. 이 글에서 나는 이 문제에 대한 좀 색다른 접근을 시도해 볼 생각이다. 나는 성을 본성으로 번역하는 일반적인 관성과 악에 대한 우리의 이해가 순자 성악설에 대한 진정한 이해에 걸림돌이라고 주장할 것이다. 성을 일단 본성이라고 번역하게 되면, 성은 인간의 본질과 같은 것이 되며, 우리의 일반적 악에 대한 이해는 선과 악이라는 이분법적 구도를 전제로 한 악이다. 이러한 견해로는 순자의 또 다른 핵심적인 주장인 “성을 변화시켜 위를 일으킨다(化性起僞).”를 주장과 ‘성악설’이 어떻게 양립할 수 있을지를 해명할 수 없게 된다. 이 논문은 순자의 성과 악 개념을 자세히 검토해봄으로써 순자가 전국시대 말엽에 이 명제를 통해 무엇을 말하고자 했는지를 규명해 보고자 한다.

영문 초록

The controversy surrounding Xunzi’s notorious assertion that (human) xing is e (evil or bad) does not seem to bring an easy conclusion; some scholars claim that since Xunzi’s notion of xing is different from that of Mencius, what Xunzi really means is not very far from Mencius’s doctrine that human xing is good. Others hold that Xunzi, indeed, advance exactly the opposite philosophical position of Mencius. In this paper, I’d like to suggest a somewhat different approach to the controversy. My approach questions the translation: xing as human nature and e as evil. Xunzi’s position, then, is understood as saying that ‘human nature is evil.’ However, it seems to be not a proper understanding of Xunzi’s doctrine. Once we construe ‘xing e’ as saying that ‘human nature is evil,’ it is most likely to understand xing as essential human nature and e as the one axis of the dualistic structure of good and evil. This view leads us to conclude that Xunzi s theory of ritual and his assertion that one can transform his or her xing into deliberative exertion (僞) are incompatible with his thesis that human xing is e. This paper aims to show that this is not the case by scrutinizing Xunzi s concepts of xing and e. Through this analysis, we can understand what Xunzi s thesis that human xing is e really implies, and situate Xunzi s philosophy in the proper historical context of pre-Qin philosophy
