일본 고대의 빈(모가리)에 대하여

국문 초록

본고는 한국 상장례 중에서 빈의 연구에 대한 선행적인 작업으로써, 일본 고대의 殯(모가리)에 대한 기본적인 내용을 살펴보는데 있다. 殯(모가리)은 일본 고대의 상장례 중의 하나로서, 사람의 죽음부터 장지에 매장하기까지의 기간 동안에 행해진 일련의 의례를 말한다. 이것은 『魏志』倭人傳이나 『日本書紀』 등의 문헌기록에도 나타나 있다. 이러한 문헌기록을 통해서 3세기대부터 상장례에서 殯이 행해졌음을 알 수 있다. 또한, 고고학에서도 埴輪의 배치나 線刻畵 및 장식벽화에서도 殯 의례의 모습을 엿볼 수 있다. 본고에서는 특히 殯의 기간, 빈옥의 위치 및 구조, 그리고 殯의 내용에 대해서 고대의 문헌기록과 고고유구 및 유물을 대상으로 검토하였다. 殯의 기간에 대해서는 문헌기록마다 다르며, 또한 같은 天皇이라도 2개월부터 5년 8개월 등으로 일정하지 않다. 또한 고고학적 검토에서는 인골과 사람의 대변 분석을 통하여 문헌기록의 8일이나 10여일로 합치한다고 보고 있다. 빈옥의 위치는 屋外에 있다는 문헌기록과 고분의 주위에 있다는 고고학적 연구결과도 있다. 빈옥의 구조에 대해서도 문헌의 기록에서는 칼로써 베어 무너뜨릴 수 있는 간단한 구조로 기술되어 있는 반면에, 고고학의 家形埴輪이나 장식벽화에 묘사된 것을 보면 견고한 가옥구조로 되어 있다. 殯 동안에 실시된 의례는 문헌기록이나 고분의 埴輪配置 및 장식변화에 나타난 것을 종합해 볼 때, 사자의 招魂이나 鎭魂등을 위한 歌舞나 기도, 그리고 供膳儀禮 등이 실시된 것으로 보인다. 본고는 일본 고대의 殯에 대한 검토이지만, 한편으로는 한국 고대의 빈 연구에 있어서 참고가 될 부분이 있을 것으로 생각한다.

영문 초록

Mogari is an ancient Japanese ritual ceremony, part of a series of ceremonies which are conducted from people s death to the time that they are buried in the tomb. Mogari has been recorded in a number of historic documents, including 『ILBONSEOGI(日本書紀)』. Therefore, by studying these documents, we can determine that Mogari was conducted from the 3rd century to the 8th century. Archaeologists have discovered images of Mogari displayed in the arrangements of Haniwa, engraved paintings, and decorated wall paintings. In this paper, I especially examined the period of Mogari, the location and structure of the sour s temporary house, and details about Mogari as described in ancient document records and archaeological relics. The actual period of Mogari has been recorded very in different documents. These documents do not correspond in spite of them being written in the time of the same Emperor. One document record describes the Mogari s house location as being outside of the house, while further research has shown the location to be around the ancient tomb. According to the document s record, the structure of the sour s temporary house is so fragile that it can be cut by sword. However, the house-shaped Haniwa or the decorated wall paintings show a very strong structure. By studying the Mogari images in the Haniwa or the decorated wall paintings, we can see that the Mogari ritual included forms of singing and dancing as well as an honoring the dead service. There are strong similarities between ancient Korean and ancient Japanese ritual customs. As such, even though this study is about the Japanese Mogari ritual, I expect that Korea s ancient ritual ceremony follows the same pattern.
