심리치료적 관점에서 접근한 미술치료의 이해

국문 초록

본 연구는 심리치료의 본질과 심리치료적 관계의 특성에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 심리치료의 한 형태로서 미술치료의 특성을 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 우선 심리치료의 어원과 정의를 살펴봄으로써 심리치료의 본질에 대해 소고하고 심리치료에 관한 다양한 담론 을 토대로 심리치료적 관계를 규정하는 특성과 심리치료 관계의 유형, 긍정적 심리치료 관계 를 구성하는 요소들을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 심리치료적 관계가 치료사의 의도와 계획에 따라 생성될 수 있는 일방적 관계가 아니며 내담자와 치료사의 상호작용을 통해 끊임없이 변화하 는 역동적인 관계이고 이론적 학습과 기술의 습득을 통해 모방할 수 없는 고유한 성질을 띠 고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 이해를 바탕으로 심리치료의 한 형태로서 미술치료의 특성을 살펴보았는데 심리치료적 관계의 특성이 다양한 의사소통 매체를 매개로 하는 미술치 료에서 더욱 뚜렷이 나타날 수 있다는 것을 인지할 수 있었다. 특히 치료사와 내담자의 이원 적 체계를 바탕으로 하는 일반적 심리치료에 비해 치료사와 내담자, 미술작업/시각적 결과물 로 구성된 삼원적 체계를 근간으로 하는 미술치료에는 보다 다각적인 관계 구조를 생성할 수 있는 치료 과정과 방식이 내포되어 있으며 이로 인해 치료사뿐만 아니라 내담자 측면에서 긍 정적 치료적 관계를 생성할 수 있는 다양한 방법과 기회가 존재한다는 점을 유추할 수 있었 다. 심리치료적 관점에서 미술치료에 대한 이러한 고찰이 국내 미술치료의 저변이 확대되고 있는 현재의 시점에서 미술치료의 본질적 특성에 대한 이해뿐만 아니라 미술치료의 정체성 및 치료사의 역할을 정립하는 데 필요한 하나의 이론적 단초가 되기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the nature of art therapy as a type of psychotherapy based on the understanding of the latter’s essential characteristics. As a way to understand the fundamentals of psychotherapy, the study traces its origin and changing concepts throughout history. The study also goes over various types of psychotherapeutic relationship and their characteristics, and looks into what constitutes a positive therapeutic relationship. Based on diverse perspectives, the study finds that psychotherapeutic relationship is not a static relationship shaped by the therapist, but a dynamically changing one based on the interactions between the therapist and the client, and that each therapeutic relationship has its own unique character which can not be easily reproduced. Based on such understanding, the study looks into the nature of art therapy as a type of psychotherapy, and suggests that the dynamic, unique nature of psychotherapeutic relationship can manifest itself in a more pronounced way in art therapy due to its use of various media. Compared with general psychotherapy which is based on therapist-client dyad, art therapy with its triadic structure (therapist-client-artwork) has the potential to develop more complex web of relationships, thus provides richer resources and opportunities for both therapists and clients to create positive therapeutic relationship. This study hopes to serve as a discursive foundation upon which to better understand essential aspects of art therapy and the role of therapist at a time when the field of art therapy in Korea is fast expanding.
