마크 로스코의 색면회화에 내재된 보편성

국문 초록

본 연구는 마크 로스코의 색면회화에 내재된 이원성과 보편성의 의미에 대해 고찰하였다. 이를 위해 그가 신화에 관심을 두었던 시기와 성숙기 회화인 색면회화 시기를 밝은 색조와 어두운 색조로 구분하고 이를 통합 적으로 살펴봄으로써 색면회화에 나타난 보편성이 무엇인지 알아보고자 하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 신화의 시기는 신화의 원형을 통해 모든 문화가 공유하는 신화의 본질, 감정적 근원을 나타내고자 하였다. 그 러나 이 시기에 이루어진 신화적 이미지 작업은 보편성과 집단무의식을 효과적으로 표출하였다고 보기에는 이 르며, 색면회화를 준비하는 시기라고 볼 수 있다. 전형적인 색면회화는 1949년 무렵에 보이기 시작한다. 밝은 색조의 시기는 빛과 공기가 공명하는 듯한 색채로 구성되는 반면, 어두운 색조의 시기는 색의 수가 줄어들고 말년에는 검은색을 사용하는 특징이 두드러지게 나타난다. 로스코의 색면회화는 일관되게 비극과 황홀, 열림과 닫힘, 수축과 팽창 등의 이원성으로 나타나는데, 이를 통해 인간의 상반된 감정은 각각 다른 위치에 있는 것이 아니라 동일선상에 존재하면서 인간의 내적 성장에 관여한다고 보았다. 즉, 그의 색면회화에 나타난 이원성은 융합과 통합을 내재하고 있으며 이는 보편적인 인간성의 조건을 반영함에 따라 융의 원형에서 일컬어지는 보 편성과 연결된다고 볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study reviewed the meaning of duality and universality embedded in color field paintings by Mark Rothko. For this, his paintings such as those produced when he was interested in myths and color field paintings produced in matured times were divided into light tone and dark tone paintings. By reviewing them comprehensively, it was tried to identify universality shown in color field paintings. The followings are the results of this study. In the time of myth, he tried to show the nature of myth that all cultures share so to speak emotional origin through archetype of myths. However, it is difficult to say that his mythical image works in this period showed universality and group unconsciousness effectively. Instead, it can be said as the preparation for color field painting period. Typical color field paintings were not produced until 1949. Paintings in the light tone period are composed with colors seeming to be resonant with light and air, while Dark Paintings have characteristics to reduce the number of colors. He came up to use black color only at the end of his life. In color field paintings by Rothko, duality of tragedy and ecstasy, open and close, and contraction and expansion is consistently shown. Through this, he tried to tell contrary feelings of human beings are not located in different locations but on the same continuum and are involved with internal growth of humans. In other words, the duality shown on his color field paintings includes integration and merge and it reflects the conditions of universal humanity and is connected to universality mentioned in the archetype by Jung.
