어머니의 직업유무와 자녀의 교육포부수준과의 관계

국문 초록

부산광역시에 소재하고 있는 공립학교에 다니면서 양친과 함께 살고 있는 1,294명의 초등학교 5 학년생들과 고등학교 1학년생들 그리고 그 어머니들을 대상으로 이 연구는 성별과 학년수준별로 어머니의 직업유무와 자녀의 교육포부수준과의 관계를 분석하였다. 전체 학생들을 대상으로 한 분 석 결과는 학생의 성과 학년수준, 가족수입, 어머니의 자녀교육에 대한 관심, 부모의 교육적 기대를 통제한 후 어머니의 풀타임 직업이 자녀의 교육포부수준에 부적으로 영향을 미친다는 것을 나타내 었다. 성별과 학년수준별로 분석한 결과는 어머니의 풀타임 직업과 주당 일하는 시간 수가 여학생 들(남학생들은 아님)과 초등학교 5학년생들(고등학교 1학년생들은 아님)의 교육포부수준에 부적으로 영향을 미친다는 것을 나타내었다. 그리고 어머니의 자녀교육에 대한 관심과 부모의 교육적 기대가 어머니의 직업이 자녀의 교육포부수준에 미치는 부적인 효과를 부분적으로 매개하였다. 이것은 어 머니의 직업이 학생들의 교육포부수준, 특히 여학생들과 초등 5학년생들의 교육포부수준에 미치는 부적인 효과는 가정 밖에서 일하고 있는 어머니들의 자녀교육에 대한 낮은 관심에서 기인한다는 것을 시사한다. 주요 연구결과, 성차 및 연령차, 그리고 미래 연구를 위한 시사점 등이 논의되었다.

영문 초록

Using 1,294 fifth and tenth graders who were attending public schools and living in both parents families in Busan, and their mothers, the study investigated the relationship between maternal employment and the child's educational aspirations by gender and grade level. The results of the full sample of fifth and tenth graders showed that after controlling for the child's gender and grade level, family income, maternal involvement, and parents' educational expectations, maternal employment influenced children's educational aspirations negatively. The results analyzed separately by the child's gender and grade level revealed that full-time maternal employment and the number of hours worked had negative effects on girls'(but not boys') and fifth graders'(but not tenth graders') educational aspirations. And maternal involvement and parents' educational expectations in part mediated the negative effects of maternal employment on children's educational aspirations, suggesting that the harmful effect of maternal employment on children's educational aspirations, especially girls' and fifth graders' educational aspirations, can be compensated for by working mothers' involvement in children's education. These findings, gender and age differences, and suggestions for the future study were discussed.
