한국사회 교육격차의 실태 및 결정요인

국문 초록

본 연구는 한국교육고용패널(KEEP) 데이터를 이용하여 한국사회에서 나타나는 교육격차의 실 태 및 원인을 분석하였다. 분석결과는 지역간?계층간 교육격차가 상당히 심각한 수준에 이르러 있음을 보여준다. 특히 교육결과인 학업성취 측면에서 대도시와 읍면지역 출신 학생들 사이에는 현격한 차이가 있었다. 그리고 아버지 학력, 가계소득, 남성보호자의 직업위계가 높을수록 학업성 취 수준도 높아지는 것으로 나타났다. 지역간에 현격한 교육격차가 존재하는 것은 고학력 부모들 이 주로 대도시에 편중되어 분포하고 있는 상황에서, 읍면지역의 상대적으로 우수한 학생들이 초 등학교 때부터 대도시로 빠져 나가는 일종의 자기선별 과정이 가세함으로써 나타난 결과로 보인 다. 계층간에 심각한 교육격차가 표출되고 있는 것은 학업성취에서 유전적 요인의 영향을 가중시 키는 교육적 동질혼 경향 및 계층간에 존재하는 자녀교육에 대한 관심과 실질적 지원 정도의 차 이에 기인하고 있을 가능성이 크다. 이는 한국사회에서 나타나는 교육격차가 어느 정도까지는 완 화시킬 수 있는 여지를 갖고 있지만, 기본적으로 상당히 치유하기 어려운 요소를 내포하고 있음 을 시사해준다.

영문 초록

Using a sample from the Korean Education & Employment Panel(KEEP), this study attempts to highlight the current educational gap in Korea and the determinant factors causing the gap. It found that there exists a noticeable educational gap in terms of academic achievement among regions and social classes. In particular, the striking difference in academic achievement is found between the students in large cities and their counterparts in rural areas. Also, a student's academic achievement is found to be closely related to his/her father's educational attainment level, household income, and male guardian's occupational status. The remarkable disparity in academic achievement among regions is mainly due to the over-representation of highly-educated parents in large cities, coupled with the concentration of high academic achievers in large city schools through the self-selection process. The academic achievement gap observed among social classes seems to result from the tendency of educational homogamy that magnifies the effect of hereditary factors and the differences in parental interest and practical support for children's education. As such, although educational gap in Korea might be narrowed to some extent, it seems very difficult intrinsically to eliminate some causes of educational gap.
