연천 무등리 출토 찰갑의 수습 및 과학적 보존

국문 초록

2011년 서울대학교박물관에서 발굴조사한 경기도 연천의 무등리 2보루에서는 수백 개의 소찰로 구성된 고구려 철제 갑옷이 출토되었다. 무등리 2보루는 임진강변에 위치한 여러 고구려 성곽중 하나로, 중심 연대는 6~7세기에 해당하는 것으로 판단된다. 유적에서는 찰갑 외에도 후걸이와 사행상철기를 비롯하여 고구려 토기편과 기와편 및 곡물들이 출토되었다. 찰갑은 보루의 북서쪽 능선 돌확 옆 석축유구에서 발견되었는데, 수백 개의 소찰이 직경 90㎝ 범위에 한정되어 분포하고 있었다. 소찰은 부식으로 인해 금속성을 띄지 못하고 산화물로 남아 있었으며, 소찰과 소찰을 연결했을 것으로 추정되는 가죽끈의 흔적은 확인되지 않았다. 본고에서는 무등리 2보루 유적에서 출토된 고구려 찰갑을 대상으로 현장에서의 응급수습, 이송후의 상태조사 및 보존처리, 안전한 이송 및 관리를 위한 보강 작업 등을 논하였다. 특히 대형 유물의 현장수습 및 보존처리 방안에 대해 검토하였으며, 이와 관련하여 실무적인 관점에서 유물의 상태, 현장 상태, 보강 재료 등 여러 가지 상황에 대해서도 다루었다.

영문 초록

The armour made of hundreds of iron pieces and presumed to belong to Goguryeo period, was excavated in June 2011 at the fort site(boru) at Mudeung-ri, Yeoncheon in Gyeonggi province by the Seoul National University Museum. The boru at Mudeung-ri was known as the watchtower of Goguryeo to keep watch on movements of Baekje which was seeking to advance north in around the 6~7th century. It was here that the ancient stone walls, pieces of earthenware and roof tiles, carbonized rice and grains as well as the armour were found. The armour was excavated from the north site of boru. Scales of the armour exposed on the surface amounted to 200 pieces and they were scattered at the area of a circle of diameter 90cm. The scales lost metallicity due to acidic environment and the strings for connecting scales were missing. This study shows the on-site urgent treatments, the condition survey after the transportation and conservation treatments, the consolidation for the safe transportation and preservation. Especially the process of on-site urgent treatment and conservation treatment for a large artifact is discussed to share various situations and problems from the practical viewpoint.
