딸림마디에 대하여

국문 초록

이 글은 딸림마디를 이음마디나 안긴마디 가운데 어느 것으로 보는 것이 문법체계의 간결성과 일관성이 있는 설명인지를 살폈다. 우리말에는 낱말이 아닌 언어단위를 월성분으로 부려쓰는 방법은 두 가 지가 있는 것으로 보았다. 하나는 문법적 절차를 거쳐서 마디로 쓰는 것 이고, 다른 하나는 대상화(objectification)해서 이름씨처럼 쓰는 것이다. 대상화를 마디의 생성과 같은 문법적 절차로 본 것은 월 속에서 ‘이름씨 상당어’로 쓰이고 있는 다양한 언어단위들을 문법 영역에 끌어들여 논의 의 대상으로 삼고자 한 것이다. 마디 가운데는 때매김 요소가 통합된 것 들도 있고, 그렇지 않은 것들도 있다. 이렇게 다른 것들이 문법적 절차를 거치는 것으로 보기 위해서 전자는 꼴갖춘월이 마디가 된 것으로 보고, 후자는 기저월이 마디가 된 것으로 보았다. 딸림마디를 안긴마디로 보려 는 논의들이 있지만, 여기서는 이음마디로 보았다. 이렇게 보아야 맞섬마 디와 딸림마디에 다 통합될 수 있는 씨끝들을 같은 것으로 볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper explored whether a subordinate clause should be considered as a conjunct clause or an embedded clause in order to provide a concise and consistent account with respect to a grammatical system. In the Korean language, there are two methods to use linguistic units other than a word as a sentence constituent. One is to use linguistic units as a clause through a grammatical process, and the other is to utilize them as a noun through objectification. By considering objectification as a grammar mechanism like the generation of a clause, this paper accounts for various linguistic units that are used like a noun in a sentence within the framework of grammar. Clauses can have either integrated tense elements or unintegrated tense elements. In order to confirm whether tense elements are integrated or not through grammatical processes, the former considers a kernel sentence to become a clause and the latter does a bare sentence to become a clause. Although there are debates over considering a subordinate clause as an embedded clause, this paper considers it as a conjunct clause. In this way, conjunct endings can be seen as the same element that can be integrated into both a coordinate clause and a subordinate clause.
