영문 초록

To investigate the neuroendocrine response after electroconvulsive therapy, serum levels of prolactin were measured before and after ECT by the RIA method in male chronic schizophrenia. Twentyfour schizophrenic patients (mean age 33.8 ±6.9yrs) randomly subdivided into ECT group(N=12) and control (simulated ECT) group(N=12). To eliminate the effects of drugs on prolactin level, all patients were maintained on adjusted dose of ne uroleptics(haloperidol 5mg /day) 1 week before ECT and direct bitemporal method of ECT was utilized. Peripheral blood specimens were taken at 10 min. before ECT and at 10，30, 50 min. after application of the current in the first, fourth and seventh administration respectively. Patients’ progress was followed by using the BPRS at the day before the first ECT and after seventh treatment. The results were as follows； 1. Serum prolactin levels became significantly elevatedat 10 min. after ECT, peaked at 30 min. after ECT (4 to 8 fold) and declined at 50 min. after ECT compared with pre-treatment concentrations in all treatment sessions (P<0.01). 2. There was significantly different serum prolactin levels between the ECT group and control, None of the prolactin concentrations of control subjects were elevated after simulated ECT (P<0.01). 3. Base levels of prolactin were unchanged during the course of ECT and no significant difference were found between session in prolactin levels after ECT ( P > 0 .05). 4. The change of serum prolactin levels after ECT did not correlate with the percent chande of BPRS total scores and age in the ECT group subjects ( P > 0 .05).
