Installation art, as a medium, requires the ongoing incorporation of innovative elements. Contemporary artists utilize mundane materials to articulate their concepts and craft specific spatial environments. This paper adopts “place” as a starting point for the examination of installation art, integrating audience psychology and societal context to illustrate the impact of place on contemporary art. In the study of contemporary installation art, the relationship between the two basic elements of the theme of place, “space” and “characteristics”, is elevated to the level of “material” and “spirit” for in-depth exploration. It is anticipated that this approach will encourage readers to pay closer attention to the social life and spiritual aspects during the artistic creation process. Norberg-Schulz suggests that place is an integrated whole composed of material essence, form, and texture, which affects the characteristics of the environment. This paper utilizes research methodologies such as literature analysis and case study to elaborate on the topic. The pluralism of contemporary society and consumerism have shaped people's values and aesthetics; the development of installation art hinges on continuous innovation and exploration, encompassing materials, spirit, space, and time, to foster its advancement. Scholars analyze the “form, materials, and creativity” of installation art from the vantage point of the artist's inspiration. The paper delves into the diversity of installation art forms, discussing various themes and materials within installation art to explore its unique characteristics and diverse creative methods, thereby promoting the evolution of modern installation art.
