국문 초록

이 연구는 일본 대중문화 개방 전･후에 한국에서 일본 영화가 수용된 양상을 분석함으로써 한국 영화가 일본 영화와 어떤 관계를 맺어왔는지 고찰한다. 한국 영화는 일제 강점기 시기에 일본 영화로부터 기술적･문화적 영향을 받으며 성장하였으며, 해방 이후부터 개방 전까지 일본 영화는 공식적으로 차단되었음에도 불구하고 비공식 경로를 통해 꾸준히 유입되고 소비되었다. 이 과정에서 일본 영화는 표절이나 번안의 형태로 수용되었으나, 한국 영화는 초기의 단순 모방에서 벗어나 점차 변용을 통해 독자적인 작품을 제작하며 정체성을 확립해 나갔다. 1998년 김대중 정부는 일본 대중문화를 단계적으로 개방하면서 한일 간 문화 교류의 새로운 장을 열었다. 개방 초기에는 예술영화를 중심으로 제한적인 수입이 이루어져, <하나비>와 <카게무샤> 등이 개봉되었으나 대중적 흥행에는 실패했다. 그러나 이후 <러브레터>, <링>, <주온>, <센과 치히로의 행방불명>과 같은 작품들이 성공을 거두며, 특정 장르에서 일본 영화가 한국 관객의 취향을 충족시키는 모습을 보여주었다. 특히 호러, 애니메이션 장르에서 일본 영화의 부상은 한국 영화계에 새로운 자극을 제공하며 제작 경향에 영향을 미쳤다. 대중문화 개방 이후 일부에서 제기되던 우려와 달리, 일본 영화의 상업적 성과는 전반적으로 낮은 편이었다. 그러나 일본과의 문화 교류는 한국 영화 산업의 발전에 긍정적인 영향을 미치며 한류, 나아가 K-콘텐츠의 기반을 마련했다. 디지털 생태계의 발달로 한･일 간 문화 교류는 더욱 활발해졌고, 일본 대중문화의 개방은 한국 영화가 글로벌 경쟁력을 갖추는 데 중요한 전환점이 되었다. 결론적으로 일본 대중문화 개방은 한국 영화가 일본 영화와의 일방향적인 관계를 탈피해 독자적인 정체성을 확립하고 세계적인 경쟁력을 확보하는 계기가 되었다. 이러한 과정을 통해 한국 대중문화는 일본 문화를 수용하고 변형하며 한류로 발전하였고, 글로벌 문화 교류 시대의 중심으로 자리 잡게 되었다.

영문 초록

This study examines the reception of Japanese films in Korea before and after the opening of Japanese popular culture, analyzing how Korean cinema has evolved in its relationship with Japanese cinema. During the colonial period, Korean cinema developed under the technical and cultural influence of Japanese films. After liberation, Japanese films were officially banned in Korea until the opening of Japanese popular culture; however, they continued to flow in through unofficial channels. In this process, Japanese films were accepted in the forms of plagiarism and adaptation. but Korean cinema gradually moved away from simple imitation and established their own identity by creating their own works thorough transformation. In 1998, Kim Dae-jung’s government gradually opened up Japanese popular culture, ushering in a new era of cultural exchange between Korea and Japan. In the early stages of the opening, imports were limited primarily to art films such as and , which were released but failed to achieve widespread popularity. However, subsequent successes of films such as , , , and demonstrated that certain genres of Japanese films resonated with Korean audiences. The rise of the Japanese cinema, especially in the horror and animation genres, has provided new impetus to the Korean film industry and influenced production trends. Contrary to concerns raised by some, the commercial performance of Japanese films in Korea has been generally low even after the opening of Japanese popular culture. However, cultural exchange with Japan positively impacted the development of the Korean cinema industry and laid the foundation for the Korean Wave and, by extension, K-contents. With the development of the digital ecosystem, cultural exchanges between Korea and Japan have become more active, and the opening of Japanese pop culture has been an important turning point for Korean cinema to become globally competitive. In conclusion, the opening of Japanese popular culture paved the way for Korean cinema to break away from its dependence on Japanese films, establish its independent identity, and secure global competitiveness. Through this process, Korean popular culture absorbed and transformed elements of Japanese culture, evolving into the Korean Wave and positioning itself at the center of the era of global cultural exchange.
