푸코의 주체화 전략: 신체의 노출과 이미지 관리를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 푸코의 주체화 논의를 신체 노출과 이미지 관리 차원에서 살펴본다. 이곳에서 질문은 다음과 같다. 주체는 예속화 상황을 어떻게 벗어날 것인가? 그것의 구체적 전략은 무엇인가? 자율적인 주체는 어떻게 가능한가? 그것의 구체적 내용은 무엇인가? 본 연구는 이러한 질문들에 대한 답을 궁리한다. 규율의 기술은 신체의 노출되는 방식과 노출되는 대상을 모두 규제한다. 『감시와 처벌』은 잔혹한 신체형 장면으로 시작한다. 신체의 노출이 보여주는 폭력의 극단성에는 법을 집행하는 자의 승리를 현시한다. 처벌받는 신체가 처벌하는 권력의 힘을 상징하는 이미지의 대상이 된다. 신체를 가시화하는 대표적 장치로 파놉티콘을 들 수 있다. 그곳에서 각 행위자는 홀로 완벽하게 개인화되고 중단없이 가시화된다. 파놉티콘 장치는 끊임없이 볼 수 있게 하고 즉각적인 인지를 가능케 하는 공간의 단위들로 배치한다. 푸코는 견유주의자의 삶의 방식을 완전히 노출된 삶으로 묘사한다. 견유주의자는 진실을 위해 어떠한 위험도 감수하는 것을 본질적인 삶의 조건으로 삼는다. 그러한 표출의 방법으로써 신체의 몸짓이나, 옷차림의 방식이나 살아가기의 방식에 있어서 진리 그 자체를 가시적으로 만든다. 고대의 글쓰기는 개인의 일상의 기록을 통해 인생에서 자신의 삶을 개선할 방법을 찾는데 활용한다. 글쓰기 기록을 통해 얻은 통찰력은 신체에 작용하여 새로운 교정 전략을 만드는 데 사용된다. 푸코는 고대의 철학자들을 통해 상상력과 이미지라는 것이 인간 세계의 본질, 그것이 수반하는 움직임, 그것이 스스로 돌보는 상승, 심연 모드로의 하강과 상승을 겪음으로써 주체가 형성된다는 것을 보여준다. 고대의 철학자들의 노출과 이미지 전략은 현대 표준화된 지식에 대한 비판으로 읽을 수 있다. 특히 현대 관료주의 사회에서 주체의 활동은 표준화된 절차의 준수, 그리고 주체는 규정된 권한 내에서 행동해야 한다. 푸코의 작업은 관료화된 사회에서 주체의 특이성과 자율성을 상실한 주체의 모습을 잘 보여준다. 푸코는 고대의 주체화의 방식에서 특이성을 배제하지 않는 주체화의 방식을 잘 보여주고 있다. 특이성의 주체를 창조하는 주체의 실천은 현재의 정형화된 주체성을 파괴하는 것이 아니라 주체성의 지반을 풍부하게 만든다.

영문 초록

This study examines Foucault's discussion of subjectivation in terms of body exposure and image management. The questions here are as follows: How can the subject escape the situation of subordination? What is its specific strategy? How is an autonomous subject possible? What is its specific content? This study seeks answers to these questions. The technology of discipline regulates both the way the body is exposed and what is exposed. Discipline and Punish begins with a brutal scene of physical punishment. The extreme violence shown by the exposure of the body symbolizes the triumph of the law enforcer. The body that is punished becomes the object of an image symbolizing the power of the power that punishes. A representative device for visualizing the body is the panopticon. There, each agent is completely individualized and uninterruptedly visible. The panopticon device arranges spatial units that allow constant viewing and immediate recognition. Foucault describes the way of life of the Cynic as a life of complete exposure. The Cynic considers it essential to take risks for the truth. As a means of expression, he makes the truth itself visible in the gestures of the body, the way of dressing, and the way of living. Ancient writing is used to find ways to improve one's life through the records of one's daily life. The insights gained through the written record are used to act on the body and create new corrective strategies. Foucault shows through the ancient philosophers that imagination and images are the essence of the human world, the movement it entails, the ascent it takes care of itself, the descent and ascent into the abyssal mode, through which the subject is formed. The exposure and image strategies of ancient philosophers can be read as a critique of modern standardized knowledge. In particular, in modern bureaucratic society, most subjects' activities are based on compliance with standardized procedures, and subjects must act within the prescribed authority. Foucault's work shows well the appearance of subjects who have lost their singularity and autonomy in bureaucratized society. Foucault shows us well the method of subjectivation that does not exclude singularity in the ancient method of subjectivation. The practice of the subject that creates the subject of singularity does not destroy the current stereotyped subjectivity, but rather enriches the foundation of subjectivity.
