국문 초록

이 논문은 프리엘의 초기작인 『필라델피아여 내가 지금 간다』에 나타난가족의 양면성을 분석한 연구이다. 프리엘은 이 작품에서 아일랜드 특유의 가족구성원의 의무와 집착, 갈등이라는 정서적 특성을 잘 드러내고 있는데 이는 세대 간의 갈등과 산업적 변화의 산물이기도 하다. 또한 아버지는 감정표현의 실패라는 장애를, 아들은 이 속박에서 벗어나려는 의지와 가족부양의 의무 사이에서 표류하는 실패를 경험하고 있다. 여기에서 작가는 공적 자아와 사적 자아라는 극적도구를 활용하여 이 갈등의 실체를 이해시키며 동시에 갈등 해소의 좌절이 결국 가족의 붕괴로 귀결되지 않을수도 있다는 양면성을 제시한다.

영문 초록

This article investigates the double-sidedness of family relations in Brian Friel’s Philadelphia, Here I Come! The limited and hollow view of the typical Irish concept of father leads to the conservative superiority complex, only resulting in lack of expression of concerns and affections toward the son. The son, meanwhile, being locked up in the indecisive attitude, the uncertainty of economic future, and the helplessness of mobility blocking, lacks in courage and confidence, shows signs of dissatisfaction and paranoia about reality. This article also analyzes the love-hate attitude between father and son through the dramatic device of doppelgänger to prove the gap of internal and external self. The article claims that despite the failure of the father and the son’s last attempt to reach a consensus, this does not eventually mean the break of the family unit.
