국문 초록

이 논문은 예이츠의 『부활』(1931)이란 희곡이 내포하고 있는 다양한 극적 전략들을 연구한다. 『부활』은 기독교에 대한 이교도적 해석이라는 파격적인 주제를 담은 희곡 『갈보리』를 1920년에 발표한 후 거의 10년 이상이 지나서 같은 주제로 회귀한 결과물이다. 『갈보리』와 같이 『부활』이 기독교 신화를 다루고 댄스 드라마의 형식을 공유하지만 극의 주제를 표현하고 이를 관객이 수용하도록 유도하는 극적 방법에 있어서는 많은 변화가 목격되고 있다. 따라서 이 논문은 극이 보유하고 있는 극작법에 주목해서 『부활』이란 희곡을 재분석하고 그 결과를 기반으로 어떻게 예이츠의 연극이 변화하고 발전하고 있는지를 증명한다. 그리고 결론으로 예이츠의 디에게시스 연극이 1960년 후반이 되어서야 정의 내려진 토탈 연극의 요소를 이미 내재하고 있었다는 것을 주장한다.

영문 초록

This essay explores the dramatic strategies in Yeats’s play The Resurrection (1931). The play is Yeats’s second treatment of his unorthodox view of Christianity. The first play with the same subject matter was titled Calvary, which was created in 1920 but never performed in Yeats’s lifetime. In addition to the subject material, both plays share the conventions of Yeats’s dance play. However, despite their similarities, The Resurrection shows various changes and development in the dramatic techniques to present the theme on the stage and make the audience accept it. Accordingly, this essay reinterprets the play focusing on such dramatic skills, and on the basis of the result, proves how The Resurrection was changed and developed. Finally, the essay further argues that Yeats’s diegetic theater retains the potential factors of total theater, which was defined in the late 1960s.
