남평 문씨의 영암 정착과 지역내 위상변화

국문 초록

영암 남평 문씨는 문맹화(文孟和(?-1487))가 처향인 영암의 영보지역으로 내려오면서 시작되었다. 남평 문씨는 그곳에서 연촌 최덕지 가문과 혼맥을 맺으면서, 점차 영암 지역사회에서 대표적인 사족 가문 중의 하나가 되었다. 당시 여지도서·향안·사마재안(司馬齋案) 등의 자료들을 통하여 살펴볼 때 영암의 유력 사족으로는 거창 신씨, 전주 최씨, 함양 박씨, 창녕 조씨, 남평 문씨 등으로 볼 수 있다. 이들은 서로 혼맥을 통해 불가분의 관계를 맺으면서, 영암에서 대표적인 사족 가문이 되었다. 한편 남평 문씨는 그들이 집거하던 지역인 영암 영보지역에서 벗어나 영암의 다른 지역과 영암외의 다른 지역 즉 전주, 해남, 장성, 안평등으로 지파(支派)를 형성하여 분화하여 살기 시작했다. 즉 남평 문씨는 영암에 성공적으로 정착한 이후에 확산되었다가 주변 지역으로 분화되어 나간 것이다. 당시 영암에는 향교와 서원이 설립되어 있었다. 영암의 사족층이라면 이 향교와 서원의 명단에 이름을 올리는 것이 당연한 일중 하나였다. 그러나 남평 문씨는 향교의 자료가 존재하는 해에 항상 이름을 올리지는 못하였다. 그러나 이름을 올리지 못한 해의 다음 연도에는 여지없이 명단에 이름을 올렸다. 이것은 남평 문씨도 영암내에서 끊임없이 노력하는 사족층이었음을 알 수 있는 대목이다. 또한 서원의 명단인 청금록에도 몇 대에 걸쳐 서원에 이름을 올리는 남평문씨의 가계도 있었고, 한 명도 서원에 이름을 올리지 못하는 가계도 있었다. 남평 문씨가 여러 지역으로 이주하면서, 문중 내부에도 서로 다른 사회적 위상을 가지는 가계들이 존재하게 된 것이다. 이러한 층위 속에서, 그들에게 지역사회내에서의 위기감이 형성되기 시작했다. 이것은 단순히 향교와 서원의 명부에 이름을 올리지 못하는 문제가 아니라, 남평 문씨의 사회적 위상이 약화되는 모습을 보여주고 있는 것이다. 영암 지역에서의 이러한 분위기는 남평 문씨에게 위기감을 가져오게 되었다. 이러한 위기감을 타개하기 위해서는 남평 문씨만의 결집화된 조직이 필요했다. 그것을 묶는 힘은 동일한 선조를 모시고 있다는 족적인 관계라는 것인데, 이것이 바로 남평 문씨 족계가 창계된 결정적 계기가 된 것으로 보인다.

영문 초록

The Yeongam Nampyeong-Mun’s family originated when Munmaengwa (?-1487) descended to the Yeongbo area of Yeongam, his hometown. They intermarried with the Choi Deokji family of Yeonchon, and gradually became one of the leading sa-jok in the Yeongam community. At that time, Yeongam's influential families can be seen as the Geochang Shin family, Jeonju Choi family, Hamyang Park family, Changnyeong Cho family, and Nampyeong-Mun’s family, according to sources such as Yeojidoseo, Hyangan, and Samajaean(司馬齋案). They became inextricably linked to each other through intermarriage and became the leading sa-jok in Yeongam. Meanwhile, Nampyeong-Mun's family moved out of Yeongam, the area where they had been living, and began to form branches and live in other parts of Yeongam and other areas outside of Yeongam, namely Jeonju, Haenam, Jangseong, and Anpeong. In other words, Nampyeong-Mun successfully settled in Yeongam and then spread out to the surrounding areas. Hyanggyo and Seowon were established in Yeongam at that time. It was one of the natural things for Yeongam's sa-jok to put their names on the list of this Hyanggyo and Seowon. However, Nampyeong-Mun was not always listed in the year when the materials of Hyanggyo existed. However, the year after the year in which they didn't make the list, they made the list without fail. This shows that the Nampyeong-Mun was also a sa-jok who constantly tried in Yeongam. In addition, in Cheonggeumrok, the list of Seowon, there were some households that were listed on the Seowon for several generations, and none of them were listed on the Seowon. As Nampyeong-Mun moved to various regions, there were households with different social status inside the family. Within these layers, a sense of crisis began to form within the community for them. This is not simply a problem of not being able to put a name on the list of Hyanggyo and Seowon, but it shows that the social status of Nampyeong-Mun is weakening. This atmosphere in the Yeongam area brought a sense of crisis to the Nampyeong-Mun’s family. In order to overcome this sense of crisis, it was necessary to have a unified organization of Nampyeong-Mun’s family. The binding force was the genealogical relationship of having the same ancestors, which seems to have been the decisive factor in the creation of the Nampyeong-Mun’s family system.
