본 논문은 전기비평 관점에서 1918-1922년 사이 엘리엇과 울프의 관계를 집중적으로 조명하고 있다. 엘리엇이 울프의 몽크저택에서 첫 조우로 촉발된 친분은 비비엔과 레너드 포함 두 부부 우정과 함께 울프 부부의 호가스출판사에서 시인의 『시편』(1919) 출판과 『성림』(1920) 서평 발표 전후 부침과 성장 및 변모해나가는 과정을 겪고 있다. 파운드, 루이스, 엘리엇, 조이스의 모더니즘 작가들과 울프 부부가 소속된 블룸즈베리 그룹과의 반목 그리고 조이스의 『율리시즈』(1922)에 관한 엘리엇의 극찬과 울프의 혹평은 이들의 문학적 우정의 대척적 사례들이다. 이들의 우정은 엘리엇이 낭송한 ｢황무지｣에 대한 울프의 예찬과 후자의 『월요일 또는 화요일』(1921) 중 ｢현악 사중주｣와 ｢유령의 집｣에 대한 전자의 호평에서 우호적으로 강화된다. 엘리엇이 격무의 로이드 은행을 떠나 작시에 전념하도록 오톨린 모렐 여사 등이 조성한 엘리엇 기금에서 시인 지원에 울프의 적극적 중재자 역할, 울프의 공동 영역(英譯)인 도스토옙스키의 ｢소설의 구상｣이 엘리엇이 편집한 『크라이테리언』(1922) 창간호에 수록된 사실들은 엘리엇과 울프의 친밀한 우정이 정점에 도달한 것을 확연히 제시하고 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to explore, from the perspective of biographical criticism, the relationship between T. S. Eliot and Virginia Woolf during the years 1918-1922. Eliot and Woolf’s first encounter at Monk’s House, her residence in 1918, deepened their friendship along with his wife Vivien and her husband Leonard. Eliot’s impressions of Woolf and Woolf’s views on Eliot, and their critical views of each other’s works, vacillate from positive to negative and from worst to best, as can be observed in the publication of Eliot’s Poems (1919) and the Woolfs’ harsh review of Eliot’s The Sacred Wood (1920). Modernist writers including Pound, Lewis, Eliot and Joyce opposed the Bloomsbury Group including the Woolfs. Eliot’s immense admiration and Woolf’s disparaging condemnation are crucially contradictory in their estimation of Joyce’s Ulysses (1922). But their friendly relationship consolidates in Woolf’s high estimation of Eliot’s recited masterpiece “The Waste Land” and the critic’s praise of “The String Quartet” and “A Haunted House” in the novelist’s Monday or Tuesday (1921). Woolf as an intermediary plays a pivotal role in financially helping Eliot to commit himself to writing poems that the poet requests from the Eliot Fund, mainly sponsored by Lady Ottoline Morrell out of Lloyds Bank. Their literary friendship culminates in the publication of Eliot’s Poems by the Hogarth Press, founded by the Woolfs, and in the printing of her co-translation of Dostoevsky’s “Plan of A Novel” as well as the would-be great modernist poem, “The Waste Land,” in The Criterion (1922) edited by the poet-critic.
