헤라클레이토스의 영원한 현재와 엘리엇의 『네 사중주』에 대한 철학적 고찰

국문 초록

『네 사중주』는 엘리엇의 시간관을 잘 보여주는 철학시다. 기존의 시간관이 과거, 현재, 미래, 영원을 나누는 것과 달리, 엘리엇은 오직 영원한 현재의 순간만을 시간으로 정의한다. 현재는 과거와 미래가 만나는 지점이며 한순간으로서의 의미를 지닌다. 이는 헤라클레이토스의 영원한 현재라는 사상을 반영한 것이다. 헤라클레이토스는 시간을 영원한 강에 비유하며 세상의 모든 것은 시간의 흐름에 따라 끊임없이 변한다고 보았다. 따라서 같은 강에 두 번 발을 담글 수 없으며, 매 순간 강물은 흘러가고 새로운 물이 자리를 채운다. 그러나 우리가 보는 강은 항상 그 자리에 있다. 이것이 정점을 설명한다. 헤라클레이토스가 제시한 시간 개념은 오늘날에도 여전히 유효하며, 우리의 삶에 적용할 때 큰 가치를 지닌다. 엘리엇은 현재의 시간을 영원한 현재로 보았으며, 죽음의 순간이 반드시 찾아올 것을 경고한다. 엘리엇의 사상이 담긴 『네 사중주』를 통해 우리는 끊임없이 변화하는 세상에서도 영원한 지혜를 추구하고, 더 나은 삶과 사회를 창조할 힘을 기를 수 있다.

영문 초록

Four Quartets aptly conveys Eliot’s perspective on time. Unlike the conventional view of time, which divides it into past, present, future, and eternity, Eliot defines time solely as the eternal present moment. The present is where the past and future converge, holding significance as a singular moment. This notion reflects Heraclitus’ philosophy of the eternal present. Heraclitus likened time to an eternal river, asserting that everything in the world undergoes constant change with the passage of time. Thus, one cannot step into the same river twice; with every moment, the river flows on, and new water takes its place. Yet, the river itself remains constant in its presence. This represents the still point. Heraclitus’ concept of time remains relevant today and holds immense value when applied to our lives. Eliot perceives time as an eternal present within a timeless realm called the present, cautioning that the moment of death is inevitable. Through Four Quartets, which encapsulates Eliot’s reflections, we can seek eternal wisdom in an ever-changing world and cultivate the strength to build a better life and society.
