국문 초록

엘리엇에 관한 리비스의 비평은 호평, 유보적 평가, 혹평에 이르기까지 흥미롭고 다양한 관점을 드러낸다. 반면에 리비스에 대한 엘리엇의 비평적 관심은 미약한 편이다. 본고는 엘리엇과 리비스 간의 복잡하고 불균등한 관계를 배경으로 두고 대학교육과 영어영문학 연구의 기능과 가치를 논의한다. 기계 시대에 저항하여 이들은 각자 고등 교육에 대한 견해를 제시한다. 리비스는 “기술-벤덤 시대”의 위협에 대항하여, “창조적 중심”으로서 주된 역할을 하는 “진정한” 대학, 그리고 중추적인 분과와 학제 간 “교섭의 중심”으로서 영어영문학을 제안한다. 당대의 상황에 대한 비판으로서 고전과 종교의 교육을 강조하는 엘리엇의 교육관은 상대적으로 더욱 보수적이고 덜 체계적이다. 결론적으로 리비스의 창조적 대학의 기획은 하나의 가능성을 열어주고 우리의 상황에 더 타당한 것이다. 엘리엇은 자신의 시에서 언어적 창조성을 구현하고 대학교육을 위해 “발견적” 가능성을 부여한다. 엘리엇과 리비스는 각기 다른 방식으로, 하지만 창조성과 문학 언어에 대한 공통의 신념을 통해 21세기 급변하는 교육의 패러다임에 통찰을 제공한다.

영문 초록

F. R. Leavis’s critical writings on Eliot reveal various interesting perspectives, ranging from high praise to reserved judgments and even harsh criticism. Conversely, Eliot’s critical interest in Leavis is somewhat lukewarm. In the process of exploring the complex and uneven relationship between Eliot and Leavis, this paper examines the functions and value of university education and English studies. Reacting against the Machine Age, each advocates his own ideas of higher education. Leavis proposes that a “real” university should play a key role as a “creative centre,” with “English” serving as a pivotal discipline and interdisciplinary “liaison centre” to counter the perceived threats of the “technologico-Benthamite age.” Eliot’s ideas of education as a critique of his contemporary circumstances are relatively more conservative and less systematic, maintaining the importance of classic and religious education. To conclude, while Leavis’s project of the creative university opens possibilities and is more relevant to our current situation, Eliot enacts a certain linguistic creativity in his poetry and provides a “heuristic” possibility for university education. In their different ways but through their shared beliefs in the value of creativity and literary language, Eliot and Leavis offer insights into the rapidly changing paradigm of education in the twenty-first century.
