국문 초록

본고는 ｢가위 밑 그림 속의 음화와 양화 1｣에서 소제목인 ‘부정어’와 관련된 핵심어 ‘가위눌림’과 ‘얼굴’을 추출하여 그 의미를 고찰하였다. 개인적 ‘가위눌림’ 경험은 가족과 마을 공동체 그리고 생명과 정치와 종교 공동체와 연결되어 있다. 그것은 작품 속에서 각각 보이지 않는 얼굴, 보고 싶지 않은 얼굴, 멀어서 희미한 얼굴을 드러낸다. 주인공에게 ‘죽음’의 경험은 공포와 두려움을 유발하여 얼굴을 보이지 않게 한다. 그것은 각각 아버지를 비롯한 형제의 죽음, 살아있는 사람의 생매장(죽음), 개의 처참한 죽음 등이다. ‘죽음’의 공포는 ‘가위눌림’으로 이어지고 가위눌림은 기억 속의 얼굴을 보이지 않게 한다. 이때의 가위눌림은 아무리 벗어나려고 시도해도 벗어날 수 없는 ‘자폐성’을 상징한다. 이 자폐성은 연작 전체에서 주인공의 자아 망실증과 연결된다. ‘죽음’의 충격으로 인해 타자의 얼굴을 잊어버리는 행위와 자아의 부재 충동은 죽음 충동의 다른 이름이다. 죽음과 신은 인간에게 절대로 알 수 없는 세계, 포착할 수 없는 얼굴, 손에 쉽게 거머쥘 수 없는 대상인 절대적 타자이다. 그것은 우리들의 이해 저편에 있는 것, 가장 낯선 대상, 살아있는 한 절대로 마주칠 수 없는 것이다. 신, 죽음과 더불어 우리는 타자를 알지 못하고, 알 수 없으며 알아서는 안 된다는 것을 받아들여야 하는데, 그 답답함을 이청준은 ‘가위눌림’으로 표상하고 있다. 그러나 이청준은 절대로 닿을 수 없을 것을 알면서도, 그 얼굴들을 마주하고, 그 얼굴들을 향하고, 마침내 그 얼굴들을 찾기를 희망한다. 그는 끔찍하고 고통스러운 현실 속에서도 타인의 ‘얼굴’을 찾아가려고 분투하며 진실과 진리에로의 접근을 시도한다. 이어지는 연작에서 이청준은 타인의 얼굴을 찾아가려는 시도와 타인의 얼굴 안에서 계시된 무한을 향해 지속적인 글쓰기를 반복하고 있다.

영문 초록

This paper extracted the key words ‘sleep paralysis’ and ‘face’ related to the subtitle ‘negative word’ in “Yin and Yang in the Picture under Sleep paralysis 1” and examined their meaning. The personal experience of ‘sleep paralysis’ is connected to family, village community, life, politics, and religious community. It repeatedly reveals the invisible face, the face that one does not want to see, and the face that is far away and dim in the work. The experience of ‘death’ for the protagonist causes fear and terror, which makes him not see the face of others. These are the death of his father and brothers, the burial of a living person (death), and the miserable death of a dog, respectively. The fear of ‘death’ leads to ‘sleep paralysis’, and the paralysis makes him not see the face of others in his memory. The sleep paralysis at this time symbolizes ‘autism’ that he cannot escape no matter how hard he tries. This autism is connected to the protagonist’s loss of self throughout the series. The act of forgetting the face of others and the impulse to lack self due to the shock of ‘death’ are other names for the death impulse. Death and God are absolute others, worlds that humans can never know, faces that cannot be captured, and objects that cannot be easily grasped. They are things that lie beyond our understanding, the most unfamiliar objects, and things that we can never encounter while alive. Along with God and death, we must accept that we do not know the Other, cannot know it, and must not know it, and Lee Cheong-jun symbolizes this frustration as ‘sleep paralysis.’ Even though he knows he will never be able to reach them, Lee Cheong-jun faces them, turns to them, and hopes to finally find them. He struggles to find the ‘face’ of others even in the midst of a terrible and painful reality, and attempts to approach truth and truth. In the following series, Lee Cheong-jun repeatedly attempts to find the face of others and continues to write toward the infinity revealed in the face of others.
