국문 초록

최근 해상 정보통신 기술의 발전은 승선 중인 선원이 가정과 사회와 연결될 수 있는 기회를 증대시키고 있다. 이에 따라 인터넷을 통해 승선 중 선원이 육상과 연결을 유지하는 것에 대한 필요성과 중요성이 다수의 연구와 조사를 통해 강조되고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 승선 중 육상과의 연결을 위한 인터넷 커뮤니케이션과 선원 직업 유지 의도 간의 관계를 실증적으로 분석하는 것이다. 또한, 인터넷 커뮤니케이션과 선원 직업 유지 의도 사이에서 온라인 사회적 자본의 매개 역할을 살펴본다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 승선 중 인터넷 커뮤니케이션, 선원의 온라인 결속형 사회적 자본, 선원의 온라인 교량형 사회적 자본, 선원 직업 유지 의도를 주요 변수로 사용하고, 결혼 여부, 직급, 나이, 월 평균 수입을 통제 변수로 하는 연구 모형과 가설을 설정하였다. 실증 분석은 상선 선원을 대상으로 진행하였고, 분석 결과 승선 중 인터넷 커뮤니케이션은 선원의 온라인 결속형 사회적 자본과 온라인 교량형 사회적 자본에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 승선 중 인터넷 커뮤니케이션과 선원의 온라인 사회적 자본이 선원 직업 유지 의도에 미치는 영향은 확인되지 않았으며, 인터넷 커뮤니케이션과 선원 직업 유지 의도 사이에서 온라인 사회적 자본의 매개 역할도 발견되지 않았다. 반면, 월 평균 수입과 직급은 선원 직업 유지 의도에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

Recent advancements in maritime information and communication technologies (ICT) have significantly enhanced opportunities for seafarers to maintain connections with their families and social networks while onboard. A growing body of literature has highlighted the critical importance of maintaining such shore-based connections via the Internet during voyages. This study aimed to empirically examine the relationship between internet communication for shore connectivity during voyages and seafarers’ intentions to remain in their professional careers. Another aim of this study was to investigate the mediating role of online social capital in this relationship. To address these aims, this study identified key variables, including internet communication onboard, seafarers’ bonding and bridging online social capital, and intentions to remain a seafarer. Additionally, control variables such as marital status, rank, age, and average monthly income were integrated into the research framework and hypotheses. An empirical analysis was conducted using data collected from merchant seafarers. Findings revealed that internet communication onboard had a positive influence on seafarers’ bonding and bridging forms of online social capital. However, the direct impact of internet communication onboard and online social capital on the intention to remain a seafarer was not substantiated. The mediating role of online social capital in the relationship between internet communication onboard and the intention to remain a seafarer was not observed either. In contrast, average monthly income and rank were found to exert significant influence on intention to remain a seafarer.
