국문 초록

현대의 디자인에 있어 소비자 수요가 다각화되고 있는 근래에, 상업적 공간디자인과 가구디자인 분야는 공예적 가치와 표현에 대한 관심을 다시 늘려나가는 추세이다. 본 논문은 디자인과 공예의 경계를 탐구해온 것으로 평가되는 브라질 태생의 디자이너 페르난도 & 움베르토 캄파나의 디자인 특성을 연구하는 것을 목적으로 하며, 그 특성을 형성하는 데에 공예적 표현이 그들의 독자적 디자인에 미친 영향에 주목한다. 전통적 공예 담론 및 표현과의 유사성과 차이를 동시에 가지고 있는 그들의 디자인은, 브라질이라는 지역적 특수성을 강하게 드러냄과 동시에 재료의 속성에 기반하고, 그 제작은 전적으로 수작업에 의존함으로써 현대 디자인에서 독점적 지위를 가지고 있다. 이에 연구자는 공예의 담론을 통해 그들의 디자인에서 보이는 공예적 표현을 탐구하였으며, 개별 사례를 바탕으로 그들의 디자인 특성을 ‘지역 문화의 직접 투영’, ‘재료를 전제로 한 전개’, ‘수작업을 통한 인본주의 추구’로 구분하여 연구하였다. 유형별 특성과 키워드로 도출된 본 연구 결과가 변화하는 현대 디자인의 시장변화 속에서 다각화되는 소비자의 수요를 대비하는 디자이너들에게 참고가 될 것으로 기대된다.

영문 초록

In response to the growing diversification of consumer demands in contemporary design, there has been a renewed interest in the craft values and expressions within commercial space design and furniture design. This study examines the distinctive design characteristics of Brazilian-born designers Fernando and Humberto Campana, who are known for exploring the boundaries between design and craft. It focuses on the impact of craft-based expressions on shaping their unique design approach. The Campanas’ work, which exhibits both similarities to and differences from traditional craft discourse and expression, is notable for its strong reflection of Brazilian cultural specificity, its material-based approach, and its reliance on handcrafting methods. These qualities have afforded them a singular status in contemporary design. Through a discourse on craft, this research investigates the craft expressions evident in their work, categorizing their design characteristics into three primary themes: “Direct Reflection of Local Culture,” “Material-Based Development,” and “Pursuit of Humanism through Handcraft.” These findings, derived from categorized characteristics and keywords, are expected to provide a valuable reference for designers seeking to meet the evolving consumer demands in today’s dynamic design market.
