Investigating Import Determinants of Russian Crude Oil: A Gravity Model Approach

국문 초록

러시아는 전세계적인 원유수출국이다. 러시아가 가지는 독특한 지리적, 정치적, 경제적 요인으로 인해 러시아의 원유수출은 다른 원유수출국과는 다른 특성을 가지고 있다. 본 연구는 러시아 원유 무역의 주요 요인들을 식별하고, 해당 요인들이 무역에 미치는 영향을 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 중력 모형을 설정하여 2007년부터 2022년까지 31개 주요 수입국의 원유수입 패널 데이터를 활용하였다. 회귀분석을 통해 거시 경제, 물류과 지정학적 변수를 통합하여 러시아 원유 무역의 영향요인을 도출한다. 회귀분석 결과, GDP, 브렌트유 가격, 유럽 연합 회원국 및 직접적인 파이프라인 연결이 러시아로부터의 원유 수입에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 무역 상대국 간의 거리, 물류성과지수 (LPI), 대러시아 제재 도입한 국가 변수는 원유 수입에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 분석되었다. 이러한 결과는 러시아 원유 무역의 특성을 잘 반영하고 있다. 러시아 경제는 에너지 수출에 크게 의존하고 있으며, 시장 원리에 따른 수출보다는 역사적으로 정착된 에너지 무역 관계를 맺고 있는 국가와의 거래에 집중되어 있는 특징이 가지고 있다. 또한, 최근 몇 년 동안 새로운 시장으로 원유 공급의 점진적인 변화가 이뤄지고 있으며 이 변화도 본 연구에서 반영된 것으로 볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

Russia is a major global exporter of crude oil. Due to its unique geographic, political, and economic factors, Russia's crude oil exports exhibit distinct characteristics compared to those of other oil-exporting countries. This study aims to identify the key factors influencing Russia's crude oil trade and analyze their impact on this trade. Using a gravity model, the study utilizes panel data on crude oil imports from 31 major importers from 2007 to 2022. Regression analysis integrates macroeconomic, logistical, and geopolitical variables to determine the influencing factors of Russia's crude oil trade. The regression analysis reveals that GDP, Brent crude oil prices, EU membership, and direct pipeline connections positively affect crude oil imports from Russia. Conversely, trade distance, the Logistics Performance Index (LPI), and the imposition of sanctions on Russia negatively impact crude oil imports. These results effectively reflect the characteristics of Russia's crude oil trade. Russia's economy is heavily dependent on energy exports, and its trade focuses more on historically established energy trade relationships rather than market-driven exports. Additionally, recent years have seen a gradual shift in crude oil supply towards new markets, a trend that is also reflected in this study.
