웹 소설에 나타난 고전소설의 활용 양상과 의미

국문 초록

이 연구에서는 웹 소설에 대한 관심과 인식의 변화에 부응하여 고전소설과 웹소설의 관계를 살펴보고자 하였다. 고전소설과 웹 소설의 시간적 간극만큼이나 양자를 일대일로 비교하기에는 난망한 까닭에 ‘웹 소설에서 고전소설이 어떻게 활용될수 있는가’에 주목하였다. 이를 통해 웹 소설에서 고전소설의 생존 방식을 전망하고웹 소설이 고전소설을 수용하면서 나타나는 특수하고 개성적인 지점을 발견하였다. 연구 대상으로 선정한 웹 소설은 『호랑이 어사, 조선을 뒤흔들다』이다. 이 작품은2021년 2월 10일부터 2022년 2월 8일까지 네이버와 카카오페이지에서 연재되었으며 고전소설 <춘향전>, <구운몽>, <박씨부인전>, <허생전>, <심청전>, <장화홍련전> 등을 활용한 스토리텔링을 통해 웹 소설로서 성공을 거두었다는 점에서 고전소설을 활용한 웹 소설 창작의 긍정적인 전망을 가늠하게 하는 사례가 된다. 우선 웹 소설에서 고전소설은 내용의 변이를 넘어 작품의 형성 과정과 관련한것들이 활용된다. 고전소설의 작가와 독자, 향유 방식도 웹 소설에서 확인할 수 있는 소재인데 나아가 세책점, 소설가, 악플러 등 소재의 다양한 확장 가능성을 엿볼 수 있다. 다음으로 웹 소설에서 선행 텍스트로서의 고전소설은 설화나 동화와 같은 ‘옛날 이야기’의 차원에서 소통된다. 고전소설의 인물들은 웹 소설의 인물들과 관계를 형성하며 고전소설과는 다른 방향으로 서사가 진행되고 고전소설 인물들의 형상이나 역할, 기능도 달라지는 등의 다시쓰기를 보여준다. 한편 웹 소설은 이미 어디에선가 경험했던 이야기들의 혼합으로 만들어진 새로운 이야기로 기존 고전소설의 익숙한 특징들, 즉 구조나 모티프, 소재 등을 답습하며 고전소설과 융합된다. 그 결과 고전소설의 장르성이 무화된 채 계속적으로 복제되며 그 과정에서 약간씩의 차이가 발생한다. 끝으로 웹 소설 『호랑이 어사, 조선을 뒤흔들다』에서 고전소설의 활용이 이처럼 다양할 수 있었던 것은 기본적으로 작가의 역량에서 비롯된 것으로 웹 소설 속 고전 소설의 활용 양상에 대한 지속적인 관심이 필요하다.

영문 초록

This study aimed to examine the relationship between classical novels and web novels in the context of the changing interest in and awareness of the latter. Due to the difficulties of directly comparing classical novels and web novels, we considered how classical novels could be utilized in web novels. This study sought to predict the methods by which classical novels survive in web novels and to discover unique and distinct aspects of their adaptation as web novels. The web novel selected for this study is “Tiger Eosa Shakes Joseon.” Serialized from February 10, 2021, to February 8, 2022, on Naver and Kakao Page, this work achieved success as a web novel through storytelling that relied on classical novel techniques, indicating a positive outlook for web novel creation utilizing classical novels. First, classical novels are utilized in web novels regarding the origin and formation of the work. Additionally, elements such as the author and readership of classical novels and their consumption methods are observed in web novels. Lending libraries, novelists, critics, and other aspects of novel culture offer possibilities for this type of adaptation. Next, depending on the genre of web novels, classical novels are regarded from the perspective of historical facts or tales, with attention to the historical events reflected in classical novels. As classical novels are communicated in the realm of “old stories” such as fables or fairy tales, characters from classical novels form relationships with characters from web novels, leading to a narrative progression different from that of classical novels, with changes in the appearance, role, and function. Moreover, classical novels are newly created within web novels through the reiteration of familiar characteristics, such as structure, motifs, and themes. This is due to the multimodality pursued by web novels, in which the genre of classical novels is continuously reproduced with slight differences. Finally, the diverse utilization of classical novels in the web novel “Tiger Eosa Shakes Joseon” fundamentally stems from the capabilities of the author.
