<유충렬전>의 가족주의와 이원적 세계관

국문 초록

<유충렬전>은 가족의 결속과 번영에 우선적 가치를 부여한 작품으로 평가받곤 한다. 가족 서사가 국가 서사와 분리된 독자적 위상을 갖는다고 보는 관점은 근대 이후의 폐쇄적 가족주의(혈연 가족주의)에 영향받은 것으로 볼 수 있는데, 이는 가족과 국가를 조화로운 공존 관계로 여겼던 전통사회의 개방적 가족주의(국가 가족주의)와 구별된다. 19세기 말 널리 읽힌 <유충렬전>의 가족주의를 분석하기 위해서는 두 유형의 가족주의를 모두 고려할 필요가 있다. <유충렬전>에서는 인물에 따라 두 유형의 가족주의에 대한 서술시각이 다르게 나타난다. 유심이나 강희주와 같은 충신형 인물들을 통해서는 국가 가족주의에 대한 신념이 선양되면서도 그 현실적 무력함에 대한 부정적 인식이 드러난다. 장 부인이나 소 부인을 통해서는 혈연 가족주의의 현실적 효용이 부각되면서도 그것이 초래하는 갈등과 분열의 위험성이 경계된다. 두 유형의 인물군은 각각 개방적 국가 가족주의와 폐쇄적 혈연 가족주의의 한계를 반영한다. 이러한 한계를 넘어서기 위해서는 유능한 통치자를 중심으로 국가의 공적 질서가 확립되어 혈연 가족의 생존을 보장해 주어야 하며, 백성들 스스로 공적 질서에 대한 신뢰를 혈연에 대한 믿음보다 중시하는 태도를 취해야 한다. 양 방향의 변화가 함께 일어날 때 두 가지 가족주의의 한계 극복과 상호 통합이 비로소 가능해진다고 볼 수 있는데, 그 가능성을 보여주는 인물이 주인공 유충렬이다. 유충렬은 혈연인 친부를 구원하려는 목적으로 국가의 위기 상황에 개입하여 통치 질서를 재건하되, 친부의 구원보다 황제의 명령 수행을 우선하는 공적 태도를 견지한다. 유충렬은 개방적 가족주의의 무력함과 폐쇄적 가족주의의 편협함을 극복하고 양자를 통합하는 인물로서 작품에서 특별한 위상을 차지한다. 한편 이러한 유충렬의 특별함은 그가 천상계와 지상계를 동시에 살아가는 이원적 정체성을 지닌 인물이라는 점에 기인한다. 유충렬의 지상계 자아는 유심의 아들이자 명나라의 신민이라는, 기존의 근원적 한계 속에 갇혀 있는 혈연 및 국가 정체성을 나타낸다. 반면 유충렬의 천상계 자아는 기존의 혈연 및 국가 정체성을 분리하고 변혁하여 새롭게 통합하는 작용을 한다. <유충렬전>에서 천상계와 지상계의 공존은 현실의 변화를 지향하면서도 기존의 가치를 지속하고자 하는 균형 감각의 산물로 해석된다. 국권 상실의 위기와 혈연에 근거한 정치의 폐단이 가중되던 19세기의 상황에서 지켜내야 할 공동체의 실체는 무엇이며 그것은 어떻게 가능한지에 대한 상상과 탐색의 결과를 <유충렬전>은 담고 있다.

영문 초록

Yuchungryuljeon(劉忠烈傳) is regarded as a work that gives priority value to family unity and prosperity. The view that family narratives have their own status separated from national narratives can be seen as influenced by the blood-familisim of modern standards, which distinguishes them from the state-familism of traditional society, which regarded family and state as harmonious coexistence. Both blood-familism and state-familisim are supported in Yuchungryuljeon, and the priority is different according to the characters. Through the loyal patriarchal figures such as Yusim and Kangheeju, the belief in state-familism is promoted as a positive value, but the negative view of its realistic helplessness is also revealed. Through female characters such as Mrs. Zhang and Mrs. So, the realistic utility of blood-familism is revealed, but the risk of conflict and division caused by it is bounded. The two types of characters reflect the limitations of state-familism and blood-familism respectively. On the other hand, the specialty of Yuchungryul is due to the fact that he is a person with dual identity who lives both in the heavenly and earthly worlds. The celestial self gives Yuchungryul an independent personality that transcends blood relations and the basis of a powerful ruling ability that enables the reconstruction of the state. Through the abilities and freedoms given by the heavenly world, Yuchungryul breaks the limits of the terrestrial state and the blood group and promotes a change that integrates the two types of familism. In Yuchungryuljeon, the coexistence of the heavenly world and the earthly world is interpreted as a product of a sense of balance that aims to change reality and continue its existing value. In the situation of the 19th century when the crisis of nation aggravated burden of blood family and the abandonment of politics based on bloodshed worsend crisis of the state, the meaning of the state and the blood family was challenged and the means of recovering the state and blood family was asked by novel readers, to which Yuchungryuljeon contains the result of exploration.
