국문 초록

충무공 이순신 장군의 추모 시설인 아산의 현충사(顯忠祠)는 조선 숙종대 건립된 이후 많은 우여곡절을 경험하였다. 그 중 가장 큰 변화를 경험한 시기는 1960~70년대에 박정희 정권에 의해 성역화 과정이 진행될 때였다. 현충사 성역화 사업은 집권자인 박정희 대통령에 의해 주도 되었다. 유년시절부터 이순신의 구국 활동과 인품에 매료되었던 박정희는 5.16군사 정변 후에 충무공 숭모사업의 일환으로 현충사를 성역화하며 민족정신의 요람으로 삼으려 하였다. 이것은 집권자의 역사의식의 결과였고, 국가 안보에 대한 위기의식이 고조되는 시기라 역사적 위인을 통해 민족정신을 함양하고 국난을 극복하는 정신적 이념으로 이순신을 인식했기 때문이다. 최고 권력자의 이순신에 대한 독점과 이데올로기화, 현충사의 성역화는 상대적으로 비판 세력으로 하여금 이순신과 멀어지게 하는 결과를 가져왔다. 따라서 박정권의 이순신 성역화 작업은 현충사를 일본식의 유일 신사(神社)로 만들고 이순신의 명망을 이용해 자신의 권력을 강화하고자 했다고 비판받기도 하였다. 따라서 현충사의 성역화 작업에 대한 역사적 평가는 긍정과 부정의 양면성을 가질 수 밖에 없다. 후세의 역사적 평가가 여하하더라도 임란의 국가적 수난을 극복한 구국의 영웅인 이순신은 어떤 정권을 불문하고 역사적으로 숭모되는 위인인 점은 변하지 않는다. 이제는 정치적 목적으로 이순신을 성웅화하고 현충사를 성역화하여 범접하기 어려운 위치에 이순신을 두지 말고 역사적 사실에 바탕을 두고 인간 이순신의 면모를 제대로 밝히고 객관적으로 조망하여 진정한 역사 위인으로 이해하고 평가할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

The sanctification project of Hyeonchungsa Shrine(顯忠祠) was led by the former president Park Chung-hee, who was in power in the 60s and 70s. Park Chung-hee, who had been fascinated by Yi Sun-sin's rescue activities and personality since his childhood, tried to use Hyeonchungsa Shrine as a cradle of national spirit by sanctifying it as part of the Chungmugong′s commemoration activity after the 5.16 military coup. This was the result of the ruler's historical awareness to diagnose and understand the era, and it was a time when the two Koreas confronted and the sense of crisis about national security was rising, so Yi Sun-sin was recognized as a spiritual ideology that fostered national spirit and overcame national crisis through historical great men. The monopoly and ideologicalization of Yi Sun-sin by such a supreme power, and the sanctification of Hyeonchungsa Shrine, resulted in keeping Yi Sun-sin away from critical forces. Therefore, at today's point, the sanctification project of Hyeonchungsa Shrine must be evaluated with two sides. However, regardless of the historical evaluation of posterity, Yi Sun-sin, the hero of the rescue who overcame the national hardship of Imjin War, remains a great man who is revered historically regardless of the regime. Therefore, it is now necessary to understand and evaluate Yi Sun-sin as a true great historical figure by objectively viewing him as a true great man, rather than making Yi Sun-sin a hero for political purposes and sanctifying the history of Hyeonchungsa Shrine in an inaccessible position.
