충무공 이수일의 생애와 호국 활동

국문 초록

우리 역사상 임진왜란이라는 미증유의 민족적 시련을 맞아 많은 호국인사들이 분연히 떨쳐 일어나 나라를 구한 사실에 대해 관심이 드높았다. 그중 무관(武官)이 받는 가장 명예로운 시호(諡號)라고 알려진‘충무(忠武)’시호를 받은 사람 중 임진왜란 때 활약한 충무공은 3인이 있다. 이순신과 김시민, 그리고 이수일(李守一)이다. 본고에서는 그 중 이수일에 대해 살펴보았다. 이수일은 임진왜란 때에도 크게 활약하였으며, 이후 광해군과 인조 대에 이르기까지 남북을 오르내리며 국난 극복의 선봉에서 활동한 인물이다. 임진왜란 시기에는 경상좌수사로서 침략 일본군을 무찔렀으며, 광해군과 인조 대에 이르기까지는 병마절도사, 삼도수군통제사, 비변사 당상 등으로 재직하면서 국가 안보에 핵심적인 역할을 수행하였다. 특히 인조 대에 있었던 이괄의 난을 진압하는 데 큰 공을 세움으로써 진무공신(振武功臣)에 선정되기도 했다. 그는 1583년에 출사하여 1632년 별세할 때까지 무려 50년간 현직에서 활동하면서 국사에 힘쓴 인물이다. 그가 보낸 반세기 동안의 공직 생활은 한 마디로 호국(護國) 활동의 연속이었다고 볼 수 있다. 이수일의 50년간에 걸친 공직생활의 특징을 종합해 보면 필자는 다음 4가지로 요약할 수 있었다. 첫째는 멸사봉공(滅私奉公)의 공직자였으며, 둘째는 청렴한 공직자의 표상(表象)이었고, 셋째는 인품과 능력을 겸비한 장수라는 점, 그리고 백성을 사랑한 무장(武將)이었다는 점들로 정리할 수 있다.

영문 초록

In our history, people who protected many countries in the face of the great national ordeal of the Imjin War were very interested in the fact that they rose up and saved the country. Among them, three Chungmugong were active during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 among those who received the “Chungmu (忠武)” known as the most honorable Siho received by a military officer. They are Yi Sun-sin, Kim Si-min, and Lee Soo-il (李守一). In this paper, I looked at Lee Soo-il among them. Lee Soo-il also played a major role during the Imjin War, and since then, he has been active in the vanguard of overcoming the national crisis by going up and down the north and south until King Gwanghaegun and Injo. During the Imjin War, he defeated the invading Japanese navy as a Gyeongsang Jwa-susa(慶 尙左水使), and until Gwanghaegun and Injo dynasty, he played a key role in national security while serving as a soldier, a naval controller, and a non-vassal leader. In particular, he was selected as Jinmugongsin (振武功臣) by making a great contribution to suppressing the rebellion of Lee Gwal at the Injo dynasty. He was appointed in 1583 and worked in state affairs for 50 years until his death in 1632. His half-century of public service was, in a word, a series of activities for his country protecting. When the characteristics of Lee Soo-il's 50 years of public service life were summarized, I could summarize them into the following four. The first was a public official of the work harder than on personal things, the second was a representation of a public official with integrity, and the third was a general with both character and ability, and a military general who loved the people.
