국문 초록

이 연구는 교육과 정치의 상관성이 높고, 두 영역을 명확히 구분하는 일이 쉽지 않은 상황에서 Hannah Arendt가 교육과 정치는 분리되어야 하는 서로 다른 영역이라고 주장한 근본적인 이유를 고찰하는 데서 출발한다. 혁신적이고 급진적인 정치사상가로 알려진 Arendt는 아이러니하게도 교육에 대해서는 보수주의적인 관점을 취하고 있다. Arendt의 이러한 입장에 근거한 긴장 관계는 보통 세 가지 수준에서 거론된다. 첫째, 인간의 고유한 독특함을 상징하는 탄생성과 이 세계에 둘 이상의 인간이 존재한다는 사실에 기반한 복수성이 어떻게 어우러질 수 있는가의 문제, 둘째, 다른 사람들과의 공존이 이루어지는 공적 영역과 개인의 소유와 생활이 보호되는 울타리로서의 사적 영역이 과연 엄밀히 구별될 수 있는지에 대한 문제, 셋째, 고유한 인격체로서 자신을 자유롭게 드러내는 행위와 이 함께함의 행위로부터 물러나야 가능한 사유의 문제가 그것이다. 이 연구는 이러한 구분이 함축하고 있는 본래의 의미를 탐구함으로써 교육과 정치의 긴장 관계를 해소할 수 있는 접점이 우리의 공통세계를 위한 책임과 관련있음을 확인하는 데 목적을 둔다. 이는 오늘날 교육과 정치를 둘러싸고 제기되는 사안들을 고려할 때 우리가 무엇을 중시해야 할 것인지에 대해 새롭게 검토할 수 있는 계기를 마련해줄 것이다.

영문 초록

At a time when education and politics are highly interconnected, and when it has become difficult to clearly distinguish between the two, this study starts by discussing the fundamental reasons why Hannah Arendt argued that education and politics are two different areas which should be separated. Arendt, who is known as an innovative and radical political thinker, ironically has a conservative view of education. This tension, based on Arendt’s view, is usually discussed at three levels: the first question is how to reconcile natality, which symbolizes the uniqueness of a human being, with plurality, based on the fact that there is more than one human being in the world; the second question is whether it is possible to strictly distinguish the public sphere, where people coexist with others, and the private sphere, which serves as a fence for one’s ownership and life; and the third question concerns the act of freely revealing oneself as a unique person and the reasoning, which is only possible by stepping away from this act of being together. By exploring the original meaning of these distinctions, this study aimed to confirm that the intersections that can resolve the tension between education and politics are related to a responsibility for our common world. It may serve as an opportunity for us to newly review what we should consider important when thinking about issues raised for education and politics in the modern context.
