영문 초록

This paper deals with the problems relating to the Linguistic Normalization and its possible solutions in Catalonia. Now Catalonia aspires to recover the sovereignty ceded to Castile through the revival of linguistic and cultural tradition and this effort has been reinforced with the Spanish Constitution in 1978 and the Autonomous Law in 1979. But the normalization of the Catalan language is now confronted with another challenge, the strategical bilingual policy, due to the radical change of this society. This challenge can be satisfactorily met by resolving a permanent controversy: the attempts of Catalan nationalists to make the language central to the definition of national identity; those of centralists to impose a Spanish national cultural order. So finally we propose that the recognition of this reality and the appropriate follow-up of bilingual policy by the Catalan government will be a shortcut to seeking a solution: the peaceful coexistence of nations and the recovery of autonomous right.
