주체의 자기변형 가능성을 묻다

국문 초록

본 논문은 탈식민주의, 생명 권력, 침묵, 단식, 윤리 등의 키워드로 다양하게 해석되어 온 쿳시의 소설 『마이클 K의 삶과 시대』를 푸코의 ‘자기 배려’라는 개념을 통해 읽어보려는 시도이다. 푸코적 의미의 ‘자기 배려’는 한마디로 주체의 자기변형 가능성이다. ‘너 자신을 알라’라는 소크라테스의 유명한 구절은 고대 그리스 시대에는 ‘자기 배려’의 일부에 지나지 않았다. 푸코는 자기 배려의 철학이 사라지고 ‘너 자신을 알라’라는 자기 인식의 문제가 철학을 지배하게 되는 역사적 과정을 추적한다. 푸코의 개념이 고대 그리스의 자유인 남성을 대상으로 하기 때문에, 쿳시 소설의 주인공인 유색인 하위주체의 현실과는 직접적인 비교가 거의 불가능하다고 생각할 수 있다. 그러나 본 논문에서 주목하는 것은 푸코가 이 개념을 통해 주체의 자기변형이 서양철학 담론에서 점점 사라지는 이유를 계보학적으로 탐구하는 지점이다. 이는 근현대 철학 담론에서 주체에 대한 논의가 추상화되거나, 20세기 포스트모더니즘 담론에서 주체는 사라지고 ‘타자’에 대한 논의가 지배적인 지형을 구성하는 것과 연결된다. 계급과 인종적 차이에도 불구하고, 푸코의 개념과 쿳시 소설을 공통으로 묶을 수 있는 부분은 ‘주체의 변형’이 어떻게 가능한가의 문제이다. 논문의 2장은 푸코의 개념을 설명하고, 3장은 언어와 자의식의 틀 속에서 거의 변하지 않는 군의관과 비루한 몸을 가진 존재로서 자기 변화의 과정을 보여주는 마이클 사이의 대립에 초점을 맞춘다. 마이클은 케이프타운에 사는 평범한 도시인에서 카루 지역으로의 이동을 통해 ‘다른 종류의 사람’이 된다. 이러한 변화는 마이클이 사회적 타자이기 때문에 가능하다기보다, 침묵과 땅을 가꾸는 구체적인 행위를 통해 기존의 근대적 주체성을 해체하는 과정에서 가능해진다. 군의관과 달리, 마이클의 주체로서의 변화가 어떤 구체적인 행위를 통해 가능한지, 이러한 주체의 변화가 어떤 윤리적 의미를 지니는지 살펴보겠다.

영문 초록

This paper attempts to read J. M. Coetzee’s Life & Times of Michael K through Michel Foucault’s concept of ‘the care of the self’. To put it briefly, no subject is capable of truth only by the Socratic self-knowledge, expressed in the famous phrase ‘know yourself.’ In ancient Greek philosophy, the Socratic self-knowledge was just part of the theme of the self-care. According to Foucault, to be able to have access to the truth, a subject must be “changed, transformed, shifted, and become, to some extent and up to a certain point, other than himself”(Foucault 15). Foucault genealogically explores the reason why the notion of self-care has disappeared while self-knowledge has gained some privileged status in the Western philosophy. The care of the self enables us to see how “the cult of the Other”(Eagleton 21), permeating postmodern theories of the late 20th-century, is related to the phenomenon of the disappearing subject in modern discourses. Both Foucault’s concept and Coetzee’s Michael K pay attention to the significance of the subject’s becoming other than oneself. Michael K transforms himself in his struggles to survive, whereas the medical doctor, the narrator of the second part, is trapped in his exaggerated self-consciousness. Going through hunger and gardening, Michael becomes “a different kind of man” from a ordinary city dweller of Cape Town. This change becomes possible in the process of deconstructing his old subjectivity through silence, gardening, and idleness as practices of freedom. This paper focuses on how Michael transforms himself and what his self-transformation signifies in an ethical sense.
