<적벽가>의 원형과 형성 재검토

국문 초록

19세기 초·중엽에 편찬된 육당본 『청구영언』에 들어 있는 ‘가곡 <적벽가>’는, 송만재(1788~1851)의 1843년 작 <관우희> 및 이유원(1814~1888)의 1871년경 작 <관극팔령>의 ‘판소리 <적벽가>’ 묘사 부분과 그 서사(敍事)가 같다. 육당본 『청구영언』에는 ‘가곡 <적벽가>’ 외에도 <삼국지연의>를 소재로 한 가곡(시조)들이 다수 들어 있다. 이 같은 시조들이 김수장을 비롯한 가객들에 의해 19세기 초·중엽 이후 널리 가곡으로 불려진 현상은 <삼국지연의>의 전래 시기와 그 향유 및 전파 방식의 통시적 흐름 속에서 파악할 수 있다. <삼국지연의>는 16세기에 우리나라로 유입되었고, 17세기에는 한글 번역본의 유통 등으로 그 이야기가 민간에 널리 알려졌다. 이 같은 시대적 흐름 위에서, 18세기에 들어와 김수장을 비롯한 가객들에 의해 <삼국지연의> 이야기를 바탕으로 한 시조들이 창작되고 또 가곡으로 불려졌던 것이다. <삼국지연의>의 전편을 넘나들며 소재를 취한 위 작품들 중 관우의 장한 의기를 주제로 삼은 ‘가곡 <적벽가>’가 특히 돋보여서 ‘12잡가’와 ‘판소리’ 같은 후대의 노래 갈래들로 확대·전이되었다고 할 수 있다. 1907년 3월 19일 발매된 한국 최초의 상업 음반의 하나에 취입된 ‘12잡가 <적벽가>’의 노랫말은 1976년 발간된 이창배(1916~1983)의 『가요집성』에 실린 노랫말과 같을 뿐만 아니라, 100여 년이 지난 오늘날 불려지고 있는 노랫말과도 같다. 이에 비추어, ‘12잡가 <적벽가>’는 그 노랫말의 성립 시기가 19세기를 넘어서 18세기까지 소급된다 하더라도 강한 고정성으로 인해 오늘날까지 원형 그대로 전승되었다고 추정할 수 있다. ‘12잡가 <적벽가>’는 <삼국지연의>의 ‘화용도 대목’을 소재로 하였으나, 관우와 조조의 대화 부분을 확대하면서 조조를 비하하고 관우를 격상한 작품이다. ‘장군’과 ‘승상’으로서의 동격적 대화를, ‘장군님’에 대한 ‘소장 조조’의 비루한 목숨 구걸과 ‘이놈 조조’에 대한 ‘장군님 또는 관왕’의 준엄한 꾸짖음으로 변개하면서, 관우의 장한 의기를 흠모하고 조조의 간흉한 처세를 질타하는 일반의 정서를 담았다.‘12잡가 <적벽가>’는 ‘가곡 <적벽가>’에 비해 훨씬 자유로워진 형식을 적극 활용하여 관우를 격상하고 조조를 비하하는 개작 추이를 더욱 분명하게 하였다. ‘판소리 <적벽가>’의 ‘화용도 대목’에는, 충직한 신하에서 방자적 인물로 변모한 정욱이 조조의 얕은 꾀를 책망하는 장면과 주창이 조조의 멱살을 잡고 위협하여 술 대접 할 테니 놓아달라고 비는 우스운 장면을 연출케 하는 장면(‘주창 사설’)이 새롭게 추가되었다. 이러한 단위 사설들은 ‘판소리 <적벽가>’를 ‘12잡가 <적벽가>’와 구분짓게 하는 가장 주요한 요소라고 하겠다. 조조를 비하하고 관우를 격상하는 일련의 확대 개작은, ‘가곡 <적벽가>’에서 시작하여 ‘12잡가 <적벽가>’에서 진일보하고, ‘판소리 <적벽가>’에서 완성되었다고 할 수 있다. ‘12잡가 <적벽가>’를 불렀던 사계축 소리꾼들의 활약 시기(1820년대)는 ‘판소리 <적벽가>’의 초기 명창 송흥록과 모흥갑의 활약 시기(순조·헌종·철종 연간, 1800~1863)보다 늦다 할 수 없다. 1820년대부터 사계축 소리꾼들이 12잡가를 불렀고 또한 그들이 최초 창작자가 아니라고 한다면, 최소한 12잡가 중 몇 작품의 형성 시기는 18세기로 거슬러 올라간다 할 것이다. 경기 12잡가는 ‘유산․적벽’이라는 말이 있는 점에 비추어, ‘12잡가 <적벽가>’는 박춘경 개작 이전의 ‘구조 <유산가>’와 더불어 가장 연원이 깊은 노래라는 점을 알 수 있다. 따라서 ‘12잡가 <적벽가>’는 12잡가 중 18세기에 형성된 작품의 하나라고 볼 수 있다. 세 갈래 <적벽가>는, 갈래 성립의 선후, 짧고 간단한 것으로부터 길고 복잡한 것으로 나아간다는 일반적인 발전법칙, 각 연행 부류의 상이한 정체성과 특유의 관습 등으로 보아, ‘가곡 → 12잡가 → 판소리’의 순으로 전개되었다고 할 수 있다. 결국 ‘판소리 <적벽가>’의 원형은 ‘12잡가 <적벽가>’를 최초로 변용한 것이라고 추정할 수 있다. 그 변용의 진폭에 대해서는 알 수 없으나, ‘12잡가 <적벽가>’를 ‘판소리 <적벽가>’의 영향 원천이라는 의미의 원형이라고 일단 말할 수는 있을 것으로 본다.

영문 초록

The ‘song ’ was published in Yookdangbon 『Cheongguyoungeon』 compiled in the early to mid 19th century. This song has the same descriptive part and narration with Songmanjae(1788~1851)'s work, , published in 1843 and Leeyoowon(1814~1888)'s work, ‘pansori ’ of , published in 1871. In addition to this, the Yookdangbon 『Cheonggooyoungeon』 includes many songs(sijos) related to . The sijos were sung by Gageks like Kimsoojang since the early to mid 19th century. This phenomenon can grasp through diachronic process which is The 's the time handed down, the enjoyment and the spread method. The was came to the Joseon in 16th century. In 17th century, this was widely known to crowd. Over the stream of times, sijos based in the stories of were made and sung by Gageks like Kimsoojang. Among the stories, the ‘song ’ which is the story about Kwanwoo's great chivalrous spirit stood out clearly from other things. So It was distendedly spread to later song genre like ‘12 japga’ and ‘pansori’. The ‘12 japga ’ known as one of the first commercial records was released in March 19, 1907. Lyrics of the song are same to lyrics of Leechangbae(1916~1983) 『Gayojipseong』 released in 1976. Also, The lyrics are samely being sung these days. Hence, the ‘12 japga ’ has been supposedly passed down as original form because of strong fixity although the year of foundation of the lyrics traces bak to 18th century. The ‘12 japga ’ was based on 's ‘Hwayongdo passage’. However, by enlarging dialogues of kwanwoo and Jojo, kwanwoo was highly appreciated and Jojo was depreciated in the work. There are dialogue of ‘general’ and ‘prime minster’ which are equal status, dialogue of begging for his life of ‘Jojo who is petty and crafty’ and dialogue of ‘general or Kwanwoo’'s scolding ‘you rascal Jojo’ severly. Through the dialogues, the songs included crowd's hearts admiring kwanwoo's great chivalrous spirit and blaming Jojo's mean behaving. The ‘12 japga ’ highlighted its topic admiring kwanwoo and blaming Jojo using free-form maximally in comparison with ‘song ’. In the ‘Hwayongdo passage’ of the ‘Pansoji ’, new scenes were added. One scene is that jungwook changing loyalist into rude person reproaches Jojo's transparent subterfuge. And the other scence(‘Joochang sasul’) is that Joochang grabs Jojo by the collar and threatens him so Jojo begs him. These parts of the Sasul are critical elements distingushing the ‘Pansoji ’ from the ‘12 japga ’. This expanded adaption that kwanwoo was highly appreciated and Jojo was depreciated started of the ‘song ’, growed to the ‘12 japga ’ and was completed to the ‘Pansoji ’. A activity time(the 1820s) of Sakechook singers who sung the ‘12 japga ’ seems not to later than a activity time(King Soonjo·Hunjong·Chuljong, 1800~1863) of SongHeungrok and Moheungkab who sung ‘Pansori ’ well at the beginning. If Sakechook singers sung the 12 japga from the 1820s and they were not originators, a time of formation of the 12 japga's some works traces back to 18th century at least. There are words like ‘Yusan·Jeokbyeok’ in the Kyungki 12 japga. Judging from this, the ‘12 japga ’ has a long history with ‘Goojo ’ not adapted by Parkchoonkyung. Hence, the ‘12 japga ’ is one of the 12 japga made in 18th century.
