국문 초록

19세기 초에 이미 <강릉매화타령>은 연행현장에서 판소리 창으로서 불린 사실이 확인된다. 이처럼 판소리로서 한 시대를 풍미한 <강릉매화타령>은 19세기 말에 소리를 잃게 되었고, 현재까지 필사본인 두 이본(<梅花歌라>와 <골원젼이라>)만이 전한다. <강릉매화타령>의 파편적인 기사와 현전하는 두 이본의 사설을 꼼꼼히 살펴보면, 흥미로운 사실을 확인할 수 있다. 19세기 초에 이미, 골생원은 ‘음탕지정(淫蕩之情)’의 대표적인 인물로서 판소리 <강릉매화타령>에 고정된 듯하다. 골생원의 ① 성적 욕망과 ② 성적 작태, ③ 생사를 구별치 못하고 매화의 육체만을 탐하는 장면을 통해서 확인할 수 있는 것처럼, 골생원은 일상인이 되기를 저버린 과도한 색골의 표상이다. 이처럼 매화의 육체만을 갈구하는 골생원의 제한된 인물 형상은 한때 시정의 조롱과 풍자거리, 웃음거리였을 뿐이다. 아울러, 골생원이 품은 욕정의 대상인 매화는 강릉사또의 ‘분부’에 따라서 골생원을 망신시키는 데에 조력하는 수동적인 인물이다. 단지 육정의 대상으로써 수동적인 인물로서 매화는 역할을 다할 뿐이다. 골생원과 매화를 주인공으로 한 <강릉매화타령>은 조선후기 변화하는 시대와 향유층의 정서, 기호에 지속적으로 대응하기에는 부족한 것이다. 변화의 여지를 마련하지 못한 고정된 작명과 인물 형상은 <강릉매화타령>의 주제를 빈약하게 만들었고 작품의 생명력을 제한하는 듯하다.

영문 초록

Gangreungmaehwataryung was performed as a genre of pansori, Korean traditional opera, in the 19th century. Gangreungmaehwataryung was loved as one of the performance at the outdoor theater in the early 19th century but it was disappeared as a genre of pansori in the late 19th century. Gangreungmaehwataryung is just left two pieces of handwriting versions, which are Golsaengwonjeon and Maehwagara, and some fragmental materials. This article shows the meaning of a leading character who is Golsaengwon in Gangreungmaehwataryung. Golsaengwon which means a narrow person in the dictionary is a role of an avatar of sexual desire in Golsaengwonjeon and Maehwagara, and some fragmental materials. Golsaengwon loves Maehwa who is a beautiful woman as a singing and dancing girl. He is strongly indulged in the sexual relationship with Maehwa. He loses his mind and soul in his daily life because he loves her morbidly. He could not do anything in his life except sexual intercourses with her. Therefore he are ridiculous of people in a village. They want to make him ashamed in the public. They make Maehwa to fake him that she has been dead already. Maehwa pretends to be a ghost in front of Golsaengwon. He is so sad and tries to have sexual intercourses with the ghost of Maehwa. He follows her ghost in day and night. Maehwa makes him a naked in the public in the end of Golsaengwonjeon and Maehwagara as well as Gangreungmaehwataryung. Golsaengwon has grotesque and ugly body and mind. Especially, he has an abnormal huge sexual organ and he is strongly indulged in the sexual intercourse with Maehwa even if she pretends to be a ghost. We can define that Golsaengwon is the avatar of sexual desire in Golsaengwonjeon and Maehwagara as well as Gangreungmaehwataryung as a genre of pansori in the 19th century.
