<흥부전>에 나타난 악과 세속적 욕망

국문 초록

이 글은 <흥부전>에서 악은 어떤 양상을 보이는지, 그리고 그것은 <흥부전>에 어떤 새로운 의미를 부여하는지 살피고자 하는 목적에서 시작되었다. <흥부전>은 모방담을 기본 구조로 권선징악이나 우애와 같은 윤리의식을 강하게 드러내면서도 관념적 세계가 아닌, 당대 현실의 모습을 담아내고 있다. 따라서 <흥부전>을 선악논리로만 파악하기는 어렵다. 이와 함께 악의 범위를 넓혀 위선, 무지, 의지 박약에서 오는 나약함이나 허약성 등까지 광범위한 악으로 규정한다면 흥부도 악인으로 규정할 수가 있게 되어 <흥부전>을 선약개념으로 파악하기는 더욱 어려워진다. 조선후기가 되면 가사와 소설에는 새로운 악인형이 등장한다. 변강쇠, 옹고집, 무숙이 등이 그러한 인물들인데 이들은 윤리 도덕에 정면으로 맞서 악인을 자처하면서 자신의 욕망에 충실하다는 점이 특징이다. 그런데 이들 인물들이 주인공으로 등장하는 판소리들은 실창되고 만다. 이에 비하여 놀부는 현재까지 사랑받는 캐릭터로 남게 되는데 그것은 바로 <흥부전>이 뒤집어쓰고 있는 윤리라는 외피 때문이다. 흥부에게 있어 세속적 욕망은 윤리 혹은 선인이라는 이름으로 억압되어야만 하는 것이지만 흥부박에서 비로소 해소가 된다. 한편 놀부는 세속적 욕망을 그대로 노출시키면서 악인을 자처한다. 물질을 향한 놀부의 과도한 욕망은 물질 화폐경제로 변화하던 봉건 해체기 당대인들의 욕망이기도 했을 것이다. 따라서 악인이라는 이름을 쓴 놀부의 반사회적인 행동들을 통해서 일종의 해방감을 맛보았을 수도 있으며, 놀부박을 통해서는 그러한 욕망의 무분별한 분출에 대한 죄의식을 씻어버릴 수 있었을 것이다. 요컨대, <흥부전>은 흥부와 놀부라는 형제를 통해서 물질적 욕망을 마음껏 분출하고 있는 작품이며 윤리라는 외피를 입음으로써 세속적 욕망이 노골적으로 드러나는 것을 막아주고 있다.

영문 초록

This study began from the investigation into the aspect of the evil in . Although shows the morality and brotherhood with the imitative narratives as its basic story, it describes also the contemporary circumstances, not the ideal world. Therefore, it is difficult to grasp the meaning of from the point of the morality. If the human weakness caused by the feeble－mindedness were also defined as the evil, Heungbu also could be defined to have the evil nature. Therefore, Heungbujeon cannot be understood from the point of the good and the evil. At the latter part of Chosun Dynasty, the evil characters appeared newly in the lyrics and novels. Byenkangsoe, Onkojip, Musuki are those characters, and they does not feel shame at their evil and they are common in being faithful to their desires. The Pansori works, in which those characters appears, are lost, but Nolbu has remained as the beloved character because of the morality in . For Heungbu, the mundane desire must be suppressed by the morality, and the good, and his desires are granted by the gourds. But Nolbu does not hide his desire and his evil character. And Nolbu's excessive desire seems to be the contemporaries' desires in those days. So the contemporaries might feel happy from Nolbu's anti－social acts, and they might feel exempted from their acts driven by their desires. In Heungbujeon, the morality does not make the mundane desires of the contemporaries shown blunt, and therefore it makes the contemporaries feel catharsis.
