장월중선의 생애와 예술활동

국문 초록

장월중선은 판소리, 가야금, 가야금병창, 거문고, 아쟁, 전통무 등에 두루 뛰어난 만능 예인으로 우리나라 전통예술 발전에 크게 기여하였다. 본고에서는 장월중선의 예술가로서의 삶을 살펴보고, 그가 평생 동안 펼쳤던 다양한 예술활동을 검토하였다. 본고에서 살펴본 바를 간략하게 정리하면 다음과 같다. 먼저 장월중선의 예술가로서의 삶을 살펴보았다. 장월중선은 1925년에 태어나 1998년에 작고하였다. 그는 전통예인 집안 출신으로 1932년부터 5년 동안 큰아버지인 장판개 명창에게 판소리를 배우고, 1937년에 고모 장수향에게 가야금풍류와 가야금산조를 배웠다. 그 후 1940부터 오태석, 정자선, 박동실, 임석윤, 한갑득, 이동안, 박송암 등으로부터 가야금병창, 거문고산조, 전통무, 불교음악 등을 배워 전통예술에 두루 능하였다. 그리고 여러 국악단체에서 활동하였고, 목포와 경주에서 뛰어난 제자들을 배출하였다. 또한 1996년에 제6회 동리대상 등 국악계의 권위 있는 상을 다수 수상하였으며, 1993년 2월 25일 경상북도 무형문화재 제19호 가야금병창 보유자가 되었다. 다음으로 장월중선의 단체활동, 공연활동, 교육활동을 살펴보았다. 첫째, 단체활동으로 장월중선은 1940-50년대에 임방울협률사와 조선창극단 등의 창극단체와 여성국극협회와 여성국악단 임춘앵과 그 일행 등의 여성국극단체에 참여하였다. 둘째, 공연활동으로 장월중선은 <장화홍련전>, <선화공주> 등의 창극에 출연하였고, <해령탑>, <청실 홍실>, <무영탑> 등의 여성국극에 출연하였다. 이외에 여러 작품을 작창하고 안무를 맡았다. 그리고 해외 공연을 통해 전통예술의 우수성을 세계에 널리 알렸다. 셋째, 교육활동으로 장월중선은 목포의 목포국악원과 유달국악원 그리고 경주의 경주시립국악단 등에서 정순임, 신영희, 정경옥, 주영희, 김수미 등 뛰어난 제자들을 다수 길러내었다.

영문 초록

Jang Woljungseon was a remarkable and multifaceted artiste of Korea known for her skill in playing gayageum, geomungo, and ajaeng; for singing the pansori and gayageumbyeongchang; and for her traditional dancing. She contributed immensely to developing traditional Korean art forms. This paper explores her life and the various art forms she excelled in as an artiste. The following is a summary of her life as an artiste: The paper begins with her life as an artiste. Jang Woljungseon was born in 1925 into a family of traditional artistes. She learned how to sing the pansori from her father’s older brother, singer Jang Pangae, for five years from 1932, and to play the gayageum from her aunt Jang Suhyang in the year 1937. She also learned from Oh Taeseok, Jeong Jaseon, Park Dongsil, Lim Seokyun, Han Gapdeuk, Lee Dongan, and Park Songam from 1940 onward. She was good at traditional Korean arts such as gayageumbyeongchang, geomungosanjo, pansori, traditional dancing, and Buddhist music. She was a member of various Korean traditional music associations and taught students who later became famous artistes. She received the 6th Dongridaesang in 1996 and other famous awards as well. She was honored as the 19th intangible cultural asset in gayageumbyeongchang in Gyeosangbukdo in the year 1993. Second, her activities in the realm of art are examined. She participated in several activities and shows conducted by various changgeuk companies, such as Joseonchanggeukdan, in the 1940s and the 1950s, and several yeoseonggukgeuk companies, such as Yeoseonggukgeukhyeophoe. She acted in changgeuk such as and and in yeoseonggukgeuk such as and . She also composed several songs and arranged dances. She contributed to making traditional Korean arts known to the world through musical performances abroad. She also taught at Mokpogukakwon in Mokpo and at several traditional Korean music organizations in Gyeongju. Her famous students include Jeong Sunim, Sin Yeonghui, Jeong Gyeongok, Ju Yeonghui, and Kim Sumi. She died in the year 1998 after a long and successful role as a leading artiste of Korea.
