감수성의 통합과 통각의 초월적 통합

국문 초록

임마누엘 칸트는 대상은 사물 자체의 상태를 나타내는 것이 아니라, 인간의 주관 일반에 의하여 구성된 현상이 된다고 주장하였고 이는 코페르니쿠스적 혁명으로 불린다. 엘리엇이 칸트의 첫째 보고서에서 언급하는 칸트의 특이점이 바로 그 점이었다. 칸트는 독일 관념론을 대표하는 철학자이고 브래들리와 베르그송이 그의 뒤를 이었다. 그동안 과거, 현재, 미래의 시간을 상호 유기적 관계 속에서 불가분의 연속체로 파악하는 흐름(flux)의 개념이나, 「전통과 개인의 재능」, 「햄릿」, 「형이상학파 시인들」에 나오는 직각 경험(immediate experience), 역사의식(historical sense), 감수성의 통합(unification of sensibility) 등 엘리엇의 핵심 시론들이 베르그송이나 브래들리의 인식틀에서 나왔다고 추측되어왔다. 하지만 2013년 3월에 엘리엇이 하버드대학교 철학 수업에 제출한 「칸트의 범주에 관한 보고서」에 보면, 엘리엇은 칸트의 초월적 철학에서 이미 인지하고 있었음 확인할 수 있다. 사고와 느낌, 즉 지성과 감성이 통합되어 분리되지 않은 경험을 나타내는 감수성의 통합은 칸트의 통각의 초월적 통합의 다름 아닌 것이다.

영문 초록

Immanuel Kant argued that the object does not represent the state of the thing-in-itself, but becomes a phenomenon constructed by human subjectivity in general, and this is called the Copernican revolution. Kant is a philosopher representing German Idealism, followed by Bradley and Bergson. In the meantime, it has been assumed that Eliot’s core poetics developed from the cognitive framework of Bergson or Bradley: the concept of flux that grasps the time of the past, present, and future as an indivisible continuum in mutually organic relationships, immediate experience, historical consciousness, Impersonality, and unification of sensitivity, etc. in “Tradition and Individual Talent,” “Hamlet,” and “Metaphysical Poets.” However, in the “Report on Kant’s Categories” submitted by Eliot to a philosophy class at Harvard University in Mar. 2013, it can be confirmed that Eliot was already aware of Kant’s transcendental philosophy. Eliot’s unification of sensibility, which represents an experience in which, intellect and sensibility are unified, is nothing other than Kant’s transcendental unity of apperception.
