국문 초록

7세기 후반 고구려·백제 멸망 후의 전후처리를 둘러싼 갈등을 계기로 벌어진 나당전쟁의 전말(顚末)에 대해서는 중국 측 사료와 신라 측 사료의 서술이 극명하게 엇갈리면서 서로 자국이 승리하였음을 주장한다. 그에 따라 국내·외 학계의 연구자들 역시 이러한 사료들을 어떻게 받아들이고 해석하는지에 따라 그 시각이 극명하게 갈리는 현황이다. 특히 지금까지 쟁점이 되었던 부분들은 주로 나당전쟁의 개시 시점과 그 원인 규명, 매소성(買肖城)과 같은 주요 격전지의 위치 비정과 그에 따른 전쟁의 전개 양상 파악, 전쟁의 종결 과정을 둘러싼 ‘신라 승전론’과 ‘한반도 방기론’의 논쟁, 더 나아가 신라의 ‘통일’, 혹은 ‘남북국’의 성립이라는 역사적 의의에 대한 담론 등으로 요약해볼 수 있다. 이처럼 나당전쟁사와 관련된 기왕의 논의들을 일별해보면 즉 한국사의 시각에서는 이른바 ‘삼국통일’ 혹은 ‘남북국 성립’의 완성 단계라는 측면이 주로 부각되어 왔다. 그러나 이와 달리 동아시아사 혹은 세계사의 시각에서는 당 세계제국의 대외정책으로서의 측면들이 주로 부각되어 왔다. 그렇기에 자연히 절대 다수가 전쟁의 시작과 종결, 그리고 그를 둘러싼 여러 해석과 담론들로만 끊임없이 수렴되며 공전(空轉)해왔던 경향이 강했던 것으로 보인다. 그러한 만큼 향후 해당 분야 연구 성과의 발전을 위해서는 다음과 같은 측면들이 좀 더 고려될 필요가 있다. 첫째, 단순한 이분법을 잠시 떠나 내·외부적 요소들을 상호보완적으로 이해하는 관점에서 나당전쟁을 포함한 7세기 대의 전쟁, 더 나아가 그 장기적인 여파의 실상을 포괄할 수 있는 새로운 역사적 개념 혹은 용어의 모색이 필요할 것이다. 둘째, 전쟁의 양측 당사자인 당과 신라 뿐 아니라 여기에 직·간접적으로 참여했던 말갈이나 거란, 기타 북방 유목세력, 고구려·백제 유민 등 여타의 종족, 집단 등에 대한 관심 역시 보다 확대될 필요가 있다. 셋째, 당이나 신라와 같은 전쟁 당사국들의 정치 구도나 제도·사회·문화상의 변화 등과 같은 다양한 내부적 맥락들과 나당전쟁이라는 시대적 영향을 더욱 밀접한 연계 아래 이해할 수 있도록 하는 접근 방식도 필요하다.

영문 초록

Regarding the start and end of the Silla-Tang War, which occurred in the late 7th century due to the conflict over the postwar process after the fall of Goguryeo and Baekje, the descriptions of Chinese and Korean historical materials are sharply divergent, claiming that each country won the victory. Accordingly, the perspectives of domestic and foreign academic researchers are also sharply divided depending on how they accept and interpret these historical records. In particular, the main issues in the academic world that have been going on so far can be summarized as follows. First, it was a issues related to the timing of the start of the Silla-Tang War and the investigation of its cause. Second, it was a issues related to the location of major battlegrounds such as Maesoseong and the consequent understanding of the development of the war. Third, there was a issues related to the confrontation between the ‘Victory of Silla theory’ and the ‘Tang’s abandoning the Korean peninsula theory’ related to the process of ending the war. And there were also issues related to the discourse on the historical significance of the 'The Unification of Silla' or ‘The establishment of the South and North dynasties'. Looking at the previous discussions related to these Silla-Tang war history, the aspect of the completion stage of the so-called 'The Silla’s unification of the three kingdoms' or 'The establishment of the North and South dynasties' was mainly highlighted from the perspective of Korean history. However, in terms of East Asian history or world history, the aspect of the foreign policy of the Tang Empire was mainly highlighted. Therefore, naturally, there was a strong tendency for the absolute majority to constantly converge only on the beginning and end of the war, and various interpretations and discourses surrounding it, and revolve around it. As such, the following aspects need to be further considered for the development of research achievements in the field in the future. First, it is necessary to find new historical concepts or terms that can cover the reality of the 7th century’s international war and its long-term aftermath, including the Silla-Tang War, from the perspective of complementing internal and external factors by replacing simple dichotomy. Second, it is necessary to expand interest not only in Tang and Silla, the parties to the war, but also in other tribes and groups, such as the Malgal, Khitan, other northern nomadic forces, and the refugees of Goguryeo and Baekje, who directly or indirectly participated in the war. Third, it is necessary to understand the various internal contexts such as the political structure of each party to the war, such as Tang or Silla, or the changes in institutions, society, and culture, and the periodic influence of the Silla-Tang War more closely.
