서울⋅경기지역 통일신라 인화문토기의 성격에 대한 시론적 고찰

국문 초록

인화문토기는 통일신라를 대표하는 토기로 여겨지나, 대규모 토기생산유적인 경주 화곡리 유적의 사례를 고려하면 인화문토기 외에 무문양토기가 다양한 기종으로 생산 및 소비되었음은 분명하다. 또한 인화문의 시문이 대부완이나 개와 같은 소형 식기류에 한정되는 경향이 있다는 점에서인화문토기는 통일신라시대에 단순히 생활용기로서 광범위하게 사용되었다기보다는 오히려 모종의 기능이나 성격, 가치 등과 관련되어 있을 가능성이 크다. 이러한 인식 하에 본고는 서울⋅경기지역 신라유적을 대상으로 인화문토기와 무문양토기의 출토양상을 비교하여 인화문토기의 성격을추론하고자 하였다. 분석결과, 서울⋅경기지역에서 인화문토기는 소수의 공방에서 생산되고 산성을 중심으로 소비되는 양상이 확인되었다. 여기에 영남지역 취락에서는 인화문토기가 광범위하게출토되는 양상을 감안하면, 서울⋅경기지역의 인화문토기의 기능과 성격은 당시 산성의 기능 및영남지역과의 관련성 하에서 이해될 필요가 있다. 군사 및 행정적 거점인 산성에서 인화문토기는 중앙에서 파견된 지방관의 생활용기이자 행정적 접대용기, 그리고 산성에서 거행된 제사에 사용된용기였을 가능성이 있다고 추정된다. 인화문토기의 이러한 성격으로 인해 이 지역에서 인화문토기는 생산과 유통이 제도적으로 제한되거나 일반 취락에서 생활용기로 선호되지 않았을 것이다.

영문 초록

While stamped-design pottery is considered to represent the Unified Silla period, examples from the Hwagok-ri site in Gyeongju, a large-scale pottery production site, demonstrate that plain pottery, in addition to stamped-design pottery, was also produced and consumed in various forms. Furthermore, given that stamping tended to be limited to small tableware such as bowls and lids, it is likely that stamped-design pottery was not widely used as a daily vessel during the Unified Silla period, but rather served some specific function or held certain characteristics or value. Based on this recognition, this study attempts to infer the characteristics of stamped-design pottery by comparing the context of stamped-design pottery and plain pottery from the sites of Unified Silla in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. The analysis confirms that stamped-design pottery was produced in a small number of workshops in the Seoul and Gyeonggi regions and was mainly consumed in fortresses. Considering the widely distributed stamped-design pottery in the Yeongnam region, the function and characteristics of stamped-design pottery in the Seoul and Gyeonggi province need to be understood in terms of the relationship between the function of the fortress and the Yeongnam region at the time. It is presumed that the stamped-design pottery at the fortress, which was a regional military and administrative center, may have been a daily ware for local officials dispatched from the central government, a serving vessel for administrative and diplomatic receptions, and a vessel used for rituals held at the fortress. Due to this characteristic of stamped-design pottery, production and distribution of stamped-design pottery in this region would have been institutionally restricted or not preferred as daily ware for commoners in settlements.
