백담사 목조아미타여래좌상의 복장 저고리와 불복장복식 현황

국문 초록

현재까지 전해지고 밝혀진 복식 유물들을 크게 분류해 보면 불복장 유물, 출토 유물, 전세 유물로 나눌 수 있다. 복식의 수량으로는 출토유물, 전세유물, 불복장 유물의 순서이지만 복식의 형태와 색채의 보존상태는 단연 불복장 복식이 최상의 조건을 갖추고 있다. 이는 불복장 유물은 경배의 대상이 되는 존상의 내부에 거의 진공상태와 같이 보관됨은 물론 사찰에서도 가장 좋고 높은 곳에 봉안되어서 환경적으로 최적의 조건을 갖추었기 때문에 유물의 보관상태가 좋을 수밖에 없다. 그리고 대부분 발원문이 함께 발견되거나 복식유물에 발원문과 발원자가 묵서 되어있어서 복식에 대한 정보와 주변 여건을 이해하는데 유리하다. 그래서 불복장 유물이 복식의 수량이 적다는 한계가 있지만 앞으로도 추가로 확인될 여지가 많다는 측면에서 불복장 복식에 대한 연구는 현재 진행형이라 할 수 있다. 본고에서 중점적으로 다루고자 하는 인제 백담사 소장의 1748년 회장저고리는 1998년에 처음으로 학계에 알려졌고, 이후 복식사 연구자들에게 많은 관심을 받았다. 이번 연구는 백담사 복장 복식유물인 저고리에 관한 내용을 현재까지 발견된 불복장 복식전체의 분류속에서 자세하게 살펴보았다. 지금까지는 불교의식과 관련성이 조금 떨어진 섬유류는 다른 복장유물에 비해 관심도가 떨어지는 편이었고 조사 자체도 어렵고 까다로운 관계로 재복장하거나 대중적인 관심에서 멀어지는 경우가 많았지만 이번 연구조사로 인해 72점의 복식유물을 정리할 수 있는 기회가 마련되어 향후 보다 정밀한 조사를 위한 기초자료가 마련된 점은 큰 성과라고 생각되어진다. 불교 신앙 형태는 스스로의 수행정진을 통해서 붓다가 되는 것이 불제자들의 가장 근본정신이기는 하지만 기복으로서의 신앙형태가 엄연히 존재하는 현실에서 불복장에 자신의 정성과 기원을 담은 복장물을 납입하는 것은 보편적인 종교행위로 이해 되어지며, 비롯 불교가 스스로의 수행을 통한 성불을 목적으로 하는 종교이지만 중생심은 그 성불조차도 부처님 전에서 복을 구하는 다양한 신앙행위를 통해서 이루고자 하는 관습을 가지고 있었음을 불복장의 다양한 복식유물을 통해서 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

Costume relics that have been handed down to this day and revealed can be classified largely into Buddhist enshrinement, excavated relics and relics handed down through the ages. Although the quantity of excavated relics outnumber relics handed down through the ages and Buddhist enshrinement, costumes of Buddhist enshrinement are definitely in the best conditions in preservation state of shape and color. It is because that relics of Buddhist enshrinement are preserved almost in a vacuum state inside Buddhist statues that are an object of worship, and have the optimum conditions environmentally as they are enshrined in the best and highest place of temples, which can only be good for preservation of relics. And it is advantageous for understanding information of costumes and surrounding situation because votive inscription is discovered mostly with Buddhist enshrinement or votive inscription and prayer are written on the relics of costumes in Chinese ink. Thus, relics of Buddhist enshrinement have a limit in quantity of costumes, but studies on the costumes of Buddhist enshrinement are considered the present progressive in a sense that there is plenty of room to be confirmed additionally in the future. Hoijang jeogori (ornamented jacket) of the year 1748 which is housed in the Baekdamsa Temple, Inje to be dealt with mainly in this study was first known to the academic world in 1998 and started to get a lot of attention by the researchers of costume history since then. This study conducted an in-depth examination of the contents of jeogori which is one of the relics of costumes in Baekdamsa Temple within the classification of the whole Buddhist enshrinement costumes that have been excavated so far. Less attention has been paid to textile that have less connection with Buddhist ceremony so far as compared to the other costumes relics, and the public spotlight moved away due to difficulty and complexity in investigation, but research survey this time provided a chance to organize 72 pieces of costumes relics and preparation of basic data for future researches is considered a great accomplishment. For Buddhist faith, becoming the Buddha through the practice and devotion of one’s own is the fundamental spirit of Buddhists, but in reality where the form of religious belief as religion praying for blessings exists clearly, dedicating costume to Buddhist enshrinement with one’s sincerity and wish is considered a universal religious activity, and this study confirmed through a variety of costumes relics of Buddhist enshrinement that Buddhism aimed at attainment of Buddhahood through the practice of one’s own but the mind of humankind had a custom to attain Buddhahood through various acts of faith that asks for fortune before the Buddha.
