국문 초록

본고에서는 일본의 국제관계사 연구자 아라이 신이치(1926∼2017)을 통해서 역사학의 변천을 추적했다. 특히 일본의 전쟁 책임과 식민지 지배 책임, 역사인식에 대한 의문이 심각하게 제기된 1990년대 이후의 전개에 주목했다. 이를 통해 일본의 지식인이 일본의 식민지 지배 문제에 대한 인식을 어떻게 심화시켰는지 살펴보았다. 아라이는 한반도 역사나 한일관계사의 전문가는 아니다. 하지만 그의 마지막 저서는 『식민주의와 문화재: 근대 일본과 한국에서 생각하기』였다. 이 책은 한일 관계를 식민지 지배라는 세계사의 주요 흐름 속에 위치시키고 있다. 이는 전후 일본 역사학의 특징을 반영한 것이다. 아라이는 어떤 과정을 거쳐 이 책을 집필하게 되었을까. 본고에서는 우선 전후 일본 역사학에서 아라이의 분석이 갖는 독창성을 살펴보았다. 1980년대까지는 식민지 책임이 강조되지 않았던 반면, 그의 연구에서는 전쟁 책임의 관점이 특히 강조되었다. 1990년대 이후 아라이는 일본의 전쟁책임연구센터 설립에 참여하여 대표 중 한 명으로 활동했다. 그곳에서 그는 종군위안부 문제와 일본과 중국의 공습 피해문제에 대해 역사학자로서 공헌했다. 한일병합조약 논란에서는 일본사와 한국사의 전문가들이 갖지 못한 시각으로 문제를 제기했다. 또한 일본 역사교과서 문제에 대한 동아시아 지식인들의 공동 토론의 장을 만드는데 기여했다. 이러한 지식인 교류를 통해 아라이는 식민지 지배에 대한 역사인식을 심화시켰다.

영문 초록

This paper traces the evolution of histriography by Shinichi Arai(1926-2017), a Japanese historians of the history of international relations. In particular, we will focus on developments since the 1990s, when Japan's war responsibility, responsibility for colonial rule, and historical awareness were severely questioned. Through this, we will examine how Japanese intellectuals deepened their awareness of the issue of Japanese colonial rule. Arai is not an expert on the history of the Korean history or the history of Japan-Korea relations. However, his last book was Colonialism and Cultural Properties: Thinking from Modern Japan and Korea. This book positions Japan-Korea relations within the major trends in world history of colonial rule. This reflects the characteristics of postwar Japanese historiography. How did Arai come to write this book? I will first explore the originality of Arai's analysis in postwar Japanese historiography. In his research, the perspective of war responsibility was particularly emphasized, whereas colonial responsibility was not emphasized until the 1980s. From the 1990s onwards, Arai participated in the establishment of the Center for Research and Documentation on Japan's War Responsibility and was one of its representatives. There, he made contributions as a historian to the issue of Comfort Women and the damage caused by air raids against Japan and China. In the controversy over the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty, he raised the issue from an original perspective that Japanese and Korean history experts do not have. He also contributed to the creation of a forum for common discussion among East Asian intellectuals on the issue of Japanese history textbooks. Through such exchanges of intellectuals, Arai deepened his understanding of the history of colonial rule.
